We have a lovely local pet shop who are very helpful and I order most of my supplies through them, but went in today to pay for the organic food they delivered last week and got a huge shock with the price. I know prices have been going up a bit, but large sack of organic pellets only used to be about £13/14, today it was £23!!!! They were very apologetic and knocked it back to £19, but that's still a huge difference to the non-organic at £10 a bag.

 

They did have some 'free range' chicken food - but can't see the point of that, it's not the food that makes them free range!

 

Am now trolling the internet to see if can get better prices - even with delivery it seems to be cheaper, but if any of you buy online, can you point me in the direction of a good supplier? Thanks.

That sounds like an outrageous price to pay, where do you get it from?

I use Allen & Page smallholders and its only about £8.30 a 20kg sack. Surely there must be somewhere closer to you where you can get it from.

That is cheap Chickwiggle! Have got a list of suppliers from Allen and Page website so will start phoning tomorrow - nearest is about 6 miles away, but their online shop isn't working, so can't see how much they charge themselves! Cheapest online I've found is nearly £18 with delivery.

 

I want to support my local shops, but not at any price.

6 miles isnt too bad a distance, i travel almost that far and if they have smallholders at a reasonable cost it should be better than paying £23! Thats shocking

I have a hunch they will all be going up. There's been masses of talk about grain shortages and resultant price hikes. I can't think chook food would be immune...

We travel about 8 miles for ours from our nearest Countrywide. We use Allen & Page too, mine didn't like the organic food, so we went for the next best good quality alterantive. I feel that it is important to feed them on quality food, because it keeps them well and we get the benefit in the nutritional value of their eggs.

I have just ordered a couple of sacks from my Local breeder and she tells me Marriages pellets are going up £1 a bag.

We're still paying £11.45 for a 20kg bag of Organic Feed Co. layers pellets from our local feed merchant/horsey shop. Might be worth checking around locally to see if feed merchants can supply you with what you want more cheaply than your pet shop.

the country store onm Sealand Raod in chester does it for about £11.00 per back. Not too far from you hopefully

Have now found one not too far away does the 20kg bag for £13.15, the Sealand shop was £14.99. My poor local shop is being charged £16 per bag by their supplier, so they are being squeezed out of the market I think which isn't fair. They can't get the ex-batt pellets anymore either as they had to place a minimum order of 23 bags, which for a small town shop isn't possible. There's not that many chicken lovers here!

 

Perhaps prices are about to rocket all round but it's still only about £14 on the smallholding website.

According to the Lady I get my feed from, prices are due to rise as the cost of ingredients has gone up. I don't mind a £1 a bag.

Try Wiggly Wigglers my girls scoff the lot!! The price of grain will go up as it's been a poor harvest again due due to the rain etc etc.

My A&P ex batt pellets have just gone up from £9.50 to £11. However a 20kg bag lasts about 11 days with my lot, soma pound a day sounds OK to me.

Could the Wirral people here, let me know where I can get chicken feed locally?

 

I've been using the internet with not too many problems but my usual supplier has taken 10 days to let me know that the feed I ordered is out of stock, so Tuesday I ordered an alternative and ordered backup from elsewhere and both of these have failed to arrive also, so I really should get out and buy some as i'm getting low on feed...grr. Ordering 2 weeks in advance is usually plenty time to replenish supplies but it seems there is some weird internet chicken feed shortage.

Higher oil/petrol prices factor into it too - they need to transport the raw ingredients and end products.
