Lorax
We got our chooks last Thursday. For the first few days we kept them completely contained. Yesterday we put our 25m netting up and let them free range in that. They love it. Speckeldy escaped though... I really want to let them wander round the whole garden. I won't do it yet though. But. What happens if we have to go out and I need them to go back to the Cube? And will they go in at night on their own. Our garden is not small, it's just under an acre and it has various levels to it. I'm not very good at chicken catching, as was proved this morning when Speckeldy escaped. She did however WANT to return home, I could see her trying to get through the netting. In the end we had to get the others back into the Cube run and open the netting.
Chicken shack
Meal worms will get them back every time.
stoice
A rattling pot of corn or 'chook chook chook' usually gets my girls attention! I may not have treats on me but they don't always know that!
karena
I can agree with meals worms. Mine didn't recognise the rattling to start with, so I had to do a little trail, but today they all started running when they heard the rattle. I made sure I always rattled when giving them before to develop the link.
Plum
My banties don't come to treats so I herd them. Just guide them quietly and often a broom in one hand helps. They return with no stress.
Chucky1
Ours FR all the time over 8 acres and sometimes the field next door. Our older girls (about 2 years old) put themselves to bed in their cubes. The new girls (about 6 months) sometimes need a little bribery, to get into their concrete house. Good Luck
