i'm looking to buy my girls a new house, and this time i'm definately going plastic 8)

i don't know if i'm allowed to say this, and i'm sorry if i offend anyone...but i'm not a fan of eglu :silenced::shock::oops:

i've been googling plastic hen houses and i've come across the 'Chicube': http://www.chicubes.co.uk/index.php

they are working with the Little Hen Rescue, and are the first company to provide 'starter packs' with rescued ex-battery hens only, which i think is cause for applaud

the houses are made from composite & aluminium, and employ a very basic design...although they do have a range of wooden Chicubes, and the amazing 'The Egg'! :o

but i'm just going for the basic medium Chicube. although i can't be held responsible if i come home with The Egg! :anxious:

i was just wondering if anyone else has one or can recommend them? i can't decide whether to pay the extra for the wooden Chicube, which comes with a removable fibre glass and resin internal shell so is as easy to clean as plastic, and a wooden sign which can be engraved with whatever you like! WOW!

luckily they are based quite local to me so i'm hoping to be able to pop down to their showroom to have a good old goosy! :D

sorry eglu (blue eglu):notalk::(

I don't have one - apart from the egg the design always looks a little 'freezer' like to me. If they did a really big egg then maybe...

I went plastic to avoid any wooden parts and I think when I bought my houses the chicubes had wooden nesting boxes and perches.

I'd be interested to hear what others think. Not that I am getting any more for a long time yet...

sorry it's not an advertisment...honest!

just looking for some advice from any potential owners of the product...i know people ask questions like this all time about flyte so fancy wooden coops, etc. so thought it would be ok. and people have posted links to really cool (but expensive) houses like the flyte so fancy 'gypsy' hen house before, so The Egg pic was just for fun really.

sorry if it's been taken the wrong way... :silenced:

chicken bark - it does still have wooden parts inside which is a well pointed out downside. and the plastic one does look like a freezer! people will think i'm storing chickens not keeping chickens!

i haven't heard of a green frog house sparksymum :?: i'm going to have a google now...

I dont like the egg one but I do like the standard Chicubes, they are well made

Someone on here got one a while back and was extremely impressed by its practicality

The only real minus points are that some are quite heavy and the runs are very small

I dont like the Green Frog houses, they arent well insulated, look ugly, are hard to clean and arent very sturdy

The Green Frog houses are getting a lot of publicity at the moment, there's an article in this month's P P magazine. There's quite a lot of discussion on another forum I'm on and those that have them are very positive about them. I certainly prefer the look of them to the Solway houses. :)

There is a thread on here from last year about Chicubes, again anyone that has one seems very pleased with them. :)

I'm a big omlet fan, but when I needed a house for my runner ducks I had to look elsewhere as omlet don't make a suitable house (otherwise that would have been my first choice). I decided on a green frog duck/goose house and have found it to be perfect for what I need. The chicubes wouldn't have even made my shortlist!

What are your hens in at the moment BB?

thanks for the feedback everyone :)

my 4 girls are currently in a wooden house (won't say where i bought it from on a public forum - but it's only 5 months old, has already had to be replaced twice by the co for basically falling apart * both the house & run, and was advertised to house 6 large/medium birds - but i think they must have meant large/medium robins :| ). it's a shame because we paid over £200 for the house (not as much as eglus, etc. but still alot of money for first timers, especially when it needs replacing after 5 months).

we bought it online and after the terrible experience i've made the vow never to buy another house without seeing it in the flesh first. so Chicubes is ideal because they are locally based which means i can actually go and look at the product before buying it.

thanks for that info redwing. hubby's currently building a nice big walk in run (although our girls do spend most of the day FR as i'm at home all day), so that wouldn't be an issue for us, but thanks for the heads-up!

there seems to be some mixed feelings about the Green Frog! i must admit i do like the design and think it looks really funky, but they do look a bit flimsy and like the type of plastic that's not got a smooth surface therefore not as easy to wipe clean :?:

really i need to have a look at one in person i think...but where to do

for the size of our growing flock we'd need to get a (cube blue) (Cube) to house them all together....and because i have ex-bats and am also re-homing some rescued broiler chickens ( :( ) next year, the design just wouldn't be practical.

i did want one initially until hubby kindly pointed out to me that our ex-bat Boo, who has brittle bones, certainly would'nt be able to get up & down the ladder - she can't even step over the lip of our existing run to get out the door without being picked up, so hubby had to make some little steps for her either side so she could get in & out on her own  .

i know some people adapt the ladders to make them easier to get up, but it is a long way up & down for a little hen, especially a poorly one.

i do actually think the eglus looks pretty 8) , but unfortunately for us they're just not a practical option.

GFD are based in Somerset - I don't know where you are. If you are ever in Yorkshire you are welcome to come and see mine.

we're in staffordshire so not very close to either! it's very nice of you to offer though  i may contact them & see if there's anywhere closer that i can have a look at one. unfortunately i've just missed all the garden shows...the last one is this weekend in b'ham  Lol
