The Naming of Chickens...

Recommended Posts

Sunday Roast (gets Sunday & Sunny) is such because the pub down the road always has the signs out for it. Paxo because I thought it was funny. Lisa-Marie because her dad was Elvis. Pebbles, Moschops & Moomin are from cartoons (also had a guinea pig called Moschops, couldn't use the other gpigs name as it was Turdie  ). Cupcake was originally Milka (Swiss choc for a Swiss bird) but it wasn't right.

I've already got the next selection of names picked out.

Aww what a great thread! :D:D:D

We got our Omlet girls for our second wedding anniversary, so as cotton is traditional for your second year, we decided to on Cottie and then Dottie and Lottie rhymed :D

Sadly we've lost Cottie and Lottie  , but Dottie is still going strong bless her :D

We've just got two new friends for Dottie and decided their names on the journey home - Hilda and Elsie :D:D We kind of like the 'old lady' type names, think they really suit them

I started off with Guinevere, Morgana, Morgan le Faye ("Faye") and Sir Lancelot, going with a King Arthur and his round table theme as I absolutely love the Mists of Avalon trilogy and as a pagan family we're all into magic and myth.

Then when Sir L passed on, we replaced him with Sir Galahad, keeping with the theme of the knights and intending to stick with it!

When the chicks hatched, I had a list of about 20 ladies and 5 boys names all Arthur themed and waiting to be owned by the wee folks. But with them being polands and silkies, it very quickly became obvious that it would be months before we knew if they were boys or girls, and I just couldn't leave them nameless.

First to be named was Beaker. Very NOT arthury, but my son and husband thought he sounded like Beaker from the muppets going meep meep meep in the brooder (they brooded in our lounge for 8 weeks!)

Flappy was next, again the 3yr old thought she was flappy as she loved to stretch her two-day-old wings far more than the others, and got her primaries much faster.

When asked what the other 2 early hatchers were going to be called, there was no doubt. The 3 yr old boy quickly said that the gold laced was Brian (who turned out to be a lassie) and the silver laced and now boss of the back yard was named Twingo. He made it up, but actually it's a type of car.

We started off with 5 blue silkies and 1 partridge. So, going for a weather theme, they were named (in order of darkness of blue) Storm, Monsoon, Mist, Rain and Cloud. Storm Mist and Cloud were from a different breeder and have since all passed on - I will not be purchasing from her again!! Shine was the name given to the partridge as at a day old, her lemon colour was bright amongst the dark ones! Xanthe and Pringle the polands were hatched in the same group, Xanthe was my dad's choice (and is now looking like a bloke) and Pringle - the three yr old got there again with his favourite type of crisps.

Next came Mildred Ethel and Maud from the breeders, I have always wanted old fashioned names. However, Maud went back as he was a boy, Ethel is still ethel but is now nicknamed David Bowie (until her hairdo plumps up she has two big eyebrow stylee things and looks like the Labyrinthine one) and Mildred - again, a boy, and renamed The Count with (Maud-replacement) wife Mina Harker (Count Dracula names).

So my mythical lot ended up being a right bunch of mixed up folks. Next yr and money permitting I'm branching out into Houdans and Crevecoeurs, will be going along a Parisian theme :D

Before they arrived, my OH & sensible friends were at pains to tell me that chickens shouldn't become pets, because it's so heartbreaking when they die (well, yes - clearly - but as I already have the heartbreak of dogs & cats in my life, it's maybe a bit late to warn me!)...so the original plan was that I would name the first three, and that their names would become kind of generic...so that when, for example, Margot died it would be a case of "Margot is dead. Long live Margot"

So...remembering the delight of The Goode Life, Margot & Barbara were easy to name....Chook number 3 was all set to be Geri til we opened the carrier when we got home - and she was all puffled and blowsy, like an old fashioned washerwoman - so I named her Brigid on the spot. (Made sense to me, anyway)

Now, I'm looking forward to an expanded flock in the spring, and am planning names happily...Think I'll work through the virtues first Faith, Hope, Charity, Prudence (well, maybe not - unless she's a very remarkable bird)...then might have some discworld chooks...Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Og etc...My sons think I should emulate Foul Old Ron, and have a trio called "Ooops, word censored!" "Millenium hand" and "Shrimp" - but I'm not sure I can carry that off! This is a vicarage, after all

oh I love that! What a fantastic theme... Pratchett is a genious. I would totally go with your sons!!!

I forgot to say that Mildred Maud and Ethel are all "worst witch" names... but it didnt work out like that in the end anyways

we started off with three hybrids and mother had just finished reading a book with two bossy regency women in it and so Louisa and Augusta were named and Alexandra fitted really well with them. When we lost Louisa we carried on with the a at the end theme and got Isabella and Lolita. Lolita was not named after the book, i hadn't read it ( i was 17), but after a guest in the Muppet show "Lolita the dancing chicken" Renee was a rescue and we kept her name. Then came three pekins who were named after the children in ballet shoes. Pauline and petrova two partridges and posy a little red girl. Prof was another rescue who answered to her name and finally Lydia and Boadicea. Lydia was from pride and prejudice and was constantly getting into trouble. And Boadicea was a RIR and defiantly a warrior queen she attacked everything that moved to begin with.

My two hybrids are called Toph and Suki...which is from Avatar - The Last Airbender cartoon  I love animation so, sad as it is, do watch a lot of cartoons!!

They were good strong characters - Toph being a stubborn character with a blunt way of dealing with things. Her hen namesake is big and bundles into things head first like a bull in a china shop

- Suki is soft spoken and calm but a natural leader and very decisive. Her hen namesake is top hen but you wouldn't knwo it at first glance. Quieter and calmer than her "sister", she is the brains of the outfit.

I didn't want to name the chicks until they grew up and I knew enough of their characters...but nicknames tend not to budge!!

We had a Cream Legbar chick who couldn't stand up...she became known as Lil'un as her development slowed down so significantly, she was almost half the size of her sister in a week. She sadly had to be put to sleep.

Her sister developed crooked toes and became known as Wonky. Sadly she too is no longer with us. She was an amazing little character.

We are left with:

Pippin (Pip) a little Poland...called Pip because that's what it says! And Pip is a unisex name..!

Goldie aka. Crow - a male Gold Laced Wyandotte, I'm sure you can figure out the reason for the names!

Yellow head - a Red Araucana...as a chick, it had a red body but yellow/pale face...and it stuck!!

Well I love historical places and being born in the states we never had Kings or Queens. I have always loved the royal history and once I decided on getting Polands and that they were considered the "Royal" chickens well that was all I needed to know for my mind to focus on royal names. I then thought I will name my first three of queens that were placed on the throne due to their birth not marriage. Thinking the next one's I get (hopefully in spring 3 more) will be named after queens that married to get on the throne. Probably Henry VIII's wives ... he was so helpful with getting numerous wives.

My first girls were Laverne and Shirley (not many people seem to know why - but it was my favourite TV show whilst I was revising for my A-levels!). Sadly only Shirl is still with us and I now have Beatrice and Ramona too (this is after my favourite book characters when I was a child). My next two girls will be Stacey and Nessa (around Xmas time hopefully - as long as OH doesn't buy me another bike...long story!) - the two after that, I'm not sure....

Mine started off all being named after girls names in songs... but then I broke with tradition a bit last summer when I hatched Roy Orpington (Orbison!) so this year with song names running short all of this years are singers (apart from the girls I rescued who had to revert back to last years theme to keep it neat!).

It does amuse me a little when someone proclaims that Elvis is 'humping' Lady Gaga...

My duck naming was a bit less themed... the drake HAD to be Francis and the girls are Daphne (as in Daffy), Donna (as in Donald) and Daisy (as in... err.... daisy!).

Ours all have Welsh names: I wanted to have something Welsh about the house, coming from a Welsh family, but they also have to be names that DH can spell/pronounce.

So, Blodwyn, Megan and Gwenno (or Gwennie in the English form) were the first three, and Dilys, Deryn and Gwladys the banties. I have a lot of names stored up for the future, and I tried to match the names with the personality of the chook.

There are some fantastic names on here. Our fist hens were named:

Henrietta - you HAVE to have a hen named Henrietta!

Holly - named by mother-in-law

Carmen - deceased, but was named by one of my nephews after a horse that he met on holiday

The new three are:

Lavender - a Bluebelle who is a light Lavender colour

Mimi - a french Cou Cou, so we went through the 'Allo 'Allo style names

Agatha - as my husband was reading a book with a character called Agatha - luckily as he wanted to call her 'Beaky' or 'Clucky' or 'Whitey'!

Goodness knows what we'll come up with next - but I love the older fashioned names!

What fantastic names you all have given your chooks  The ones I liked best are 'Pratchett' and 'Helena Bantam Carter' Just brilliant!

For my present lot my OH wanted them all called after Indian take aways: Chick Pea, Vindaloo (for the cockerel who was doing orange poos on arrival) Tikka and Madras. Quite jolly except that in the end my sensibilities won out and we decided not to let my chicks think of what their relations might end up as, especially as these ones will never be food! Now we have all 'D's as our little cockerel came from somone who already had herbs as a theme and so he is called 'Dill'. The hens are Doodle, Dolly and Delia and I might add a Dandelion and a Daisy. Somone here has a Ditto and I might add that to my list too.

With regard to being able to tell them apart so I'd know who was who and could call them by their rightful name, I got a bit obsessed. Each time I went to buy a chook the person said I could not have one on her own but had to have two - always just about identical. I'd get the two and then give one away to a friend (making sure it was a nice home) and then I'd end up getting another two of a different colour. It got kinda expensive as my OH keeps reminding me.

Ours were/are jewels/stones. I haven't named a hen yet  My husband decided on Pearl as in The Black Pearl, my DD chose Opal as it is her birthstone and my son chose Ruby cos he liked the song by the Kaiser Chiefs. Opal and Pearl are now in the great hen house in the sky and we have 2 new girls. My son chose Crystal (Sussex) and my DD chose Hemmy - short for hematite. It's usually black/grey and Hemmy is a Bluebelle who is very grey. Also says that hematite is 'dense' and unfortunately she seem sto be living up to her name!

My two are collectively called 'my babies'. There real names are PP Mayday, shes big and bossy like the bond girl and my OH has called his GNR Nikki after his daughter, I thought she would go mad, she has beautiful red hair which she dyes brown as she hates it but chicken Nik is red and proud! Well I have got several more bond girls I can have and the OH has another 2 daughters so there is definate potential there for a few more 'my babies '!

Reading this thread it seems that all us chicky parents are slightly barking !

I too like old lady names but didn't want to go for anyone I knew and that was alive, as then it would feel morbid when either one died :( . So I went for important women in history, and then shortened them for everyday.

So Em is Emmeline Pankhurst

Ava is Octavia Hill

and Millie is Millicent Fawcett

(And re the random pants reference, my cat is called Alice, frequently lengthened to Alice T Pants. Don't recall why  )
