What is this noise? *Update*

Recommended Posts

Please tell me we haven't got yet another poorly girl :(

I've been out for a couple of hours today and returned to notice Hilda, our ginger girl from Thornes is making a really loud noise and sticking her head upwards when she does it.

I'll try and describe the noise, it's like a very loud "bok-booooooooooooaaaaaak" every so often as she's waddling around the run.

Didn't know what to do for the best, so I brought her inside, wrapped her in an old towl and gave her a cuddle for a bit. She didn't make the noise as often whilst inside.

When I put her back with the others, she pecked away at some sweetcorn but inside when I offered her a grape she wasn't interested.

She hasn't got a watery nose or eyes. It's possible she maybe breathing through her mouth, but I'm not sure. Her mouth is opening a bit.

The other two seem they're usual selves :D

Can anyone shed any light on this at all?

Oh I'm hoping so Eglutyne as she hasn't laid an egg yet, but folks on here think she may well be about to

I remember when Dottie and co started laying there was a lot of noise too......

Fingers and everything crossed that's what it is. I'd be devastated if it was anything horrible :(

I hope the noise is to do with an egg rather than anything being wrong. If she seems bright enough I wouldn't worry too much - but knowing what you've been through I can understand why you are cautious.

BTW do you chop the grapes up? - I seem to remember a while back reading that whole grapes can get stuck in their crop and basically start fermenting in there. I always chop grapes up small now if I feed them just to be on the safe side.

Thank you CB, much appreciated :)

Today's the first time I've ever given them grapes and when I brought Hilda in I offered it to her but she wasn't interested, even when I picked a bit off for her too

I gave one each to the other two and Elsie ran around with it throwing it about and Dottie pecked away at hers. I'll bear that in mind to cut them up though thanks :)

I rember the first time I heard a 1st egg laying noise (seems like a while ago but it was only this July) I thought something dreadful was happening. I ran round the garden looking for a cat or a fox entry point. I couldn't believe the din that was being made. Talk about a major announcement. I do hope that you find a nice new egg. !egg!

Hiya everyone, just a little update for you.

Was dreading getting up this morning and what we might find :(

Hilda is still making her noise, but not half as much as yesterday afternoon. She's puffed up a bit and is looking quite sorry for herself, with her little tail feathers facing down most of the time :(

She's been scratching around in the run a bit and she ventured off into the Eglu earlier and she's eat and drank a little too.

We're very worried (remembering Lottie one of our Omlet girls doing the puffed up thing too), so I've contacted Thornes and they say she's probably laying a softie and to keep her with the others until it passes. They said the worst thing I could do is to seperate her and she should keep moving around - I guess it's like she's in labour or something?

Will be keeping a very close eye on her and I'll let you know how we get along

When hens are sick they go quiet not noisy so I dont think its much to worry about

Thank you Redwing, yes I remember now with little Lottie, she was very quiet and withdrawn. I'm learning fast with this rollercoaster ride we're having with our girls!

Hilda is making her noise again today, but not half as much as yesterday afternoon. Here's hoping it's a softie trying to come out

Thank you CC. Yes the noise was incredibly loud yesterday. She's still doing it a bit today, but not half as much. Here's hoping it's a softie trying to get out

How is you're chicken? Any more noises or eggs??

Thanks Donna. No eggs as yet, but hoping it's a softie causing Hilda to be a bit off colour  . She's making her noise a bit today, but not half as much as yesterday afternoon, bless her.

I would be inclined to agree she's about to lay a softie...one of my girls got very loud and seemed distressed/wouldn't settle...She hadn't laid before and suddenly she laid two softies (and nothing else) in a week...then started laying perfectly!

Hope she's back to normal soon!
