What do you do to de-stress

Ive had to stay off of school today (no major loss there!) because im ill. Went to the doctors to find a diagnosis of said problem and turned out it was because of stress (from upcoming exams and the like). But the question is, how do I stop being stressed? Usually I would snuggle down on the sofa with a cup of tea (but im not allowed caffine!!) How do you all just, forget things and relax?

I had a really bad couple of weeks at work at the end of October and I was due to marshal the Britcar 24-hour race around that time. On the Thursday I was close to feeling I should just phone in my apologies cos I felt so exhausted, fed up, etc. But it was one meeting I'd been looking forward to all year so I "forced" myself to go.

 

Well, I can't believe how good I felt on the Monday. It rained on the Friday and Sunday, I was at a post which was useless for blue-flagging (the drivers never look at you), I'm not so keen on endurance racing (prefer saloons) and I don't "do" sleep deprivation but it was SUCH a good meeting. There is something about the atmosphere at the 24-hour, there's the feeling of winning for all the teams who just make the finish and this year the race was nail-biting for the final 3 hours or so with the winning margin just under a minute.

 

I've come to the conclusion that I "need" marshalling to soothe my soul. It sees to be my way of de-stressing with the 24-hour race an extreme example.

 

I'm sure this won't work for everybody, though. :wink:

Ultimately you need to remove the cause of the stress....but like the others I find exercise a good way out. My best top tip is to take up bodyboarding or surfing. There is nothing to beat the exhilaration of catching a wave, preferably off a beautiful beach. Concentrating on a)staying alive (I exaggerate a bit here!) and b)catching the next wave takes all your concentration. No worries if you're a beginner or not confident (thats me :D) - stay close to shore and play in the wavelets! Then, when you are finally exhausted, out you get and find a large calorific meal somewhere. And plan to do it all over again :D

 

Slightly easier to arrange are going for a nice walk, gardening, or playing with chooks, cats etc

I think that tackling the source of the stress is key, but i't's easier said than done.

Something that absorbs all your attention is the best way to forget it - whether that's exercise, cooking, doing a puzzle or whatever - for me it's singing. Spending time with friends always helps, too.

 

Something I've done at various times is keep a diary - before you go to bed, write down how you're feeling and then put it all behind you when you close the book, to help you sleep. If you're having a hard time at the moment, try writing down three good things that have happened today.

I too have been told I need to de-stress.I don't really do exercise (the thought of it makes me feel more stressed -all those wobbly bits :vom::lol: ) and seem to have lost the ability to sit and read which I used to love.

 

Someone has recommended jigsaw puzzles and I've just started. Sounds a bit sad but I have found it quite addictive and the concentration means I think of nothing else at the time. I'm only on my second puzzle and its a difficult one. Its hard to put down but I do find it relaxes me. I do wonder if I will start dreaming about it :!:

 

I also like to have a long hot bath. Taking that one step further have you ever been to a spa? OMG I float out of there, expensive but worth every penny. I am a stressy person by nature and normally only sleep in a bed, in the dark at night but on a recent trip to the spa I fell asleep outside, in the cold after lunch. I was truely amazed. I can not recommend the Aqua Sana at Centre Parcs highly enough, you can book day trips and they often do special deals for two. It is so wonderful and I keep saying I am going to make a pact to ensure I go at least three times a year. If I could afford it once a week would be heaven, even once a month.... :drool:

mmm, they all sound lovely. I think I might have a warm bath tonight and read the no.1 ladys detective agency- a nice feel good book. Perhaps I could persuade my mum for us both to go to a spar in the christmas holidays- or maybe just to have a facial at corner cottage in town... and I think i'll take bella for a long walk today aswell.

I think my biggest problem is that i will work and work until im falling asleep on my homework. I think I definatly need to add more breaks to my evenings.

The one good thing thats come out of this is that ive discovered that I really like peppermint tea :D
