expectant Eglu cube owners!

Recommended Posts

Hello,

| would just like to introduce myself. :D

I have been umming and ahhhring about taking the eglu plunge for about two years now. My ever helpful wife put a stop to that by pushing me in. 8)

She ordered an Eglu cube! Its estimated time of arrival is 27th May.

We are getting rather excited about it. Friends and family all told us we were daft shortly before placing an order for eggs.

Don't know how many hens to get yet, but will probably opt for six all named after curries.

This is my first venture into a forum, I normally just read other peoples threads in a the hope of finding what I need. I am not shy, just don't know how to forum yet, so here goes.

Any help and advice on the hen keeping front would be warmly received.

Several people have told me that it is a most heinous crime keeping chickens in your garden and that the heavies from the council will be coming to get me.

I cannot find anything that suggest this mythical law actually exists, I am not in rented property and don't live in a tower block so i reckon it's ok.

Anyhow this is turning into an epic, so I'll go before I get carried away.

Heres to the good life!

Welcome to the forum Couperman!

I hope you and your wife will enjoy your chickens and cube - what colour cube did you go for?

As for the bylaws about keeping chickens, my mother in law  said she didn't think we were allowed to, but i didn't bother checking our deeds or anything - am sure you'll be fine! We found several more chicken owners in our road later anyway! Sweet talk the neighbours with some eggs! :D

it wasn't my choice, i would have preferred green, I think wifey was hoping to see it on google earth! I have got used to the purple idea now though.

She also has expressed an interest in blue eggs, any idea which breed lays blue? or do you just get blue ones when they are a bit sad.

 Cream legbars are one breed laying blue eggs, there are one or two hybrids too.

OH insisted on green too  , would love a purple eglu :D

Hope you enjoy your new chickens and cube.

Hi and welcome!

Several things:

1 Purple is THE colour so your wife was very astute

2 Araucana's lay lovely, very blue eggs, but not necessarily on a regular basis

3 I love your signature - that one really made me laugh!

4 You sound crackers so am sure you'll feel very at home here!

Hello Couperman - purple is the ONLY colour to get - and hadn't thought of checking on Google Earth - eggcellent idea!

Are you getting your chooks from Omlet? I'm getting my cube (or rather I'm getting other half's cube as a pressie) but not til June 16th so a llloooonnnnggg wait. we're getting 5 chooks, I wanted to name then Britney, Kylie, Madge, Beyonce and Shakira but don't think hubby will be happy shouting " come here Kylie...." What d'you reckon?

Mrs Bertie,

I am afraid we are not within reach of Omlets chuck truck. So we will have to source some locally. That way they will better understand my 'smoggy' accent!

Omlet have recommended a breeder 17 miles away, I hope there will not be an additional wait after the cube arrives (they haven't told us who the breeder is yet)

I don't think ex-batt rescue super heroes have ventured this far north yet nearest seems to be Lincolnshire unless Couperwife is mistaken.

I think it is good to get the Cube first and have time to think about the best way to arrange it before the chickens arrive. You will find it very hard trying out different arrangements once it is full of birds.

Aren't you lucky going straight to the Cube! It looks a cleverer design than the original Eglu, and the hens get more room for the same amount of space.

You go for it Couperman!" One of my girls is an Araucana cross, she's a pretty consistent layer despite being in her third season now. She lays beautiful turquoise eggs most days, with the odd break for moulting. Dolly is dotty as they come, but a loveable character, and yes, the eggs do taste a little different - the yolk seems creamier.

Welcome to the Omlet forum Couperman :D I lurk on a couple of other forums but this is the only one worth posting on  For some reason a common interest in hens makes it the only forum where everyone seems normal
