Chucky Mama
I bought one of these (large green and white) a couple of months ago and the base has split in the frost. Maybe I was a bit naive but I didn't expect this to happen. I have been told by the people that I bought it off that they are not frost proof and that they will spit at low temperatures Shame there was no warning on the labelling. madchickenlady
I've had mine for nearly three years and haven't had any probs. I even left mine out when it was -14C I've been thinking of picking up another one anyway, so might do it this weekend
Chucky Mama
I thought they would be fine but was told today that they should be bought in during cold weather Edited: I am not happy that this has split, I have looked them up online and they are described as frost resistant My supplier (local pet store) said that resistant doesn't mean frost proof and that I should have been told to bring it in during cold weather I have spoken to them again and told them that I want my money back. They have reluctantly agreed to refund me. They still insist that any plastic water container will split in cold weather
Jools
I wonder if you have a faulty one? Mine have been bomb-proof (famous last words) and while I have good intentions of getting them in when it's due to freeze, I regularly forget and end up defrosting them all with boiling water. Chucky Mama
Maybe it is a cheap copy (wasn't cheap though)
oneyolktoanother
i've had mine for year with no probs but did always wander about the frost, which one will you get next?
Egluntyne
You have been unlucky there, CM.. I have a couple and they have been fine during the last cold snap.
Redwing
Mine have all been ok, the only ones that have split are the ones we have broken trying to get ice out I do avoid the really hard plastic ones - I call it 'brittle plastic' but its quite hard to describe but the plastic is paler and sometimes marbled, the ones I use are a bit softer if that makes any sense
Lavenders_Blue
I know they are more expensive but I don't think you can beat the galvanised drinkers. I have two and they are indestructable.
Chucky Mama
I took it back this afternoon and exchanged it for a galvanised one. £19 extra but it is sooo much easier to fill and will last an eternity.

kevtheplumber
you will save the etxra it cost in time, galvanised will last as long as you want it
Mr Rhode Island Red
i had one for three years with no problems, it was easily able to withstand -12C. Until it was "accidentally" dropped on a inconveniontly placed rock. I bought 2 more small ones over the winter, which both cracked with frost . Now i have a big 15L one which seems almost indestructable
Redwing
Its worth noting that with galvanised drinkers you cannot add apple cider vinegar to the water - just a warning
Poached Egg
Shame about your drinker Chucky Mama. We've just got a couple of galvanised troughs so useful to hear about the ACV - hadn't occured - thanks Redwing
Jools
Chucky Mama, if yours was the 8l super drinker and you've still got the top ...... I've got a spare bottom!! Mine have so far survived freezing temperatures (and boiling water), but my big one wasn't up to a fence being blown onto it! The top broke but I still have the redundant bottom (minus the legs as they gave way too), so if you want it just let me know.
Chucky Mama
, how funny. I would have taken you up on your offer but the shop took the broken one back when got the galvanised one as an exchange. Thanks anyway
Mr Rhode Island Red
Its worth noting that with galvanised drinkers you cannot add apple cider vinegar to the water - just a warning Why?
Jools
It reacts with the coating, eventually causing it to break down which leads to toxins then dissolving in the water.
The Dogmother
Shame that, mine have all been fine.... they've frozen solid on the odd occasion, been scrubbed and bunged in the dishwasher with the cat and dog bowls. A couple of years old and still going strong.
bluekarin
mine have been okay in the cold. I particularly love the ice bowls we get when emptying them I did have a base break but that was my own stupid fault. I bashed it to break the ice - but instead broke a hole in the base
