Wet under her vent

Recommended Posts

Vera layed a softy this morning and got her bum wet, but tonight when I was putting them to bed I noticed she was still wet.I've had her in an cleaned her up, just under the vent was caked in a white crust and her matted feathers smelt of ammonia. Could she be incontinent?

Her vent looked OK and she is eating well . I wormed them in December.

The white is probably urates. She may have some inflamation or infection in vent or laying tract. In common with pigeons, chickens produce excess urates following infection (or so my vet at the time told me who only had information on pigeons  )

I have also observed that they produce extra lubricant when laying softies so can become wet. If she has been trying to lay for some time in a soiled area (nestbox used by others as bedroom) then the urates from droppings may have just adhered to the feathers.

Another consideration is vent gleet which is a different smell to ammonia more noxious, a yeast infection that needs treating.

I would give her a wash in warm water and mild shampoo, dry with a hairdryer (they love this) and see what happens now. :D

One of my White Stars, who previously had a prolapse, drips 'lubricating fluid' whenever she lays an egg. I wash her bum regularly, and trim the feathers there to lessen the 'caking' and she seems fine. She is eating and drinking well and lays regularly. I think it is just one of those things.
