Chooks Aloud
I've noticed from the recent pictures posted that a water bottle had been fixed to a run, I assume for the chicken to drink from. Can chickens use water bottles, like rabbitss etc? If so I can use mine in the other run save having dishes on the floor getting mucky. bronze
My girls fill there glug up with hemcore within seconds. I had already bought a rabbit bottle as someone had suggested it as something for them to do but now they use it as their sole water supply. Cinnamon
I am not 100% on this as I haven't seen it,but I think that the new nipple drinker works a bit like a bunny bottle....that is they peck at drips from the bottom. I want one for my girls, but whenever I call they say it will be a few more weeks
Chickpea
Oooh, I think I better get one of them rabbit things for my girls, like you say Bron, they fill up the glug with mud and bark in no time!!
Laura & CTB
I bought one of these for the girls run - just make a change from the glug. I remeber getting one years ago that constantly had a drip on the end which is what I was hoping for but the one I got didnt drip at all and I dont think the girls would ever figure out how to suck
The Dogmother
They use 'nipple drinkers' ( ) in battery cages, and chooks take to them well, although you have to take the size of your hens into account when siting it.
Jill
Sorry to be dense but what are nipple drinkers? I know what bunny bottles are but are they the same? I find the glugs fill up with hemcore etc really quickly so an alternative would be a good idea.
The Dogmother
Nipple drinkers are similar in concept to the bunny type water bottles in that they have a little ball that has to be licked to feed the water down. My glug always looks like they've been washing their feet in it, but I reckon that seeing as they are happy to drink out of mucky puddles and drain covers, that a bit of muddy water in their glug won't harm them
Guest
My girls sit up on top of the eglu run and poo into the Glug! I change their water every day!
Jill
Thanks. I might try a bottle but not sure I want to go into the pet shop and ask for a nipple drinker Pooing from the top of the run into the glug is impressive
Gallina
Here are the feeders (as shown on the Omlet site) that come with the cube. The one on the left that looks like a set of cow's udders is the nipple one for water: By this time next week I shoud be able to tell you whether they are any good, or whether I have had to resort to old royal blue feeders (which will not look stylish in a purple cube). I expect they will be in the shop soon. James has promised me that something else I have desperately wanted for months is going in the shop soon too: the mesh to put under the Mark 3 Eglu to keep the rats out. Jill
The cube looks more and more tempting
Jill
My eglu is an old yellow one and although I love the colour obviously "Ooops, word censored!"ody else did as it has been discontinued and I can't get yellow grub or glugs Yet another reason to change to a cube! Gallina
I don't like the glug and grub as much as the peanuts, and I think there are others who feel like this. (If anyone is interested in a green glug & grub, by the way, I see that there is one of each being sold separately on eBay at the moment.) To get enough vertical height, I think you would have to hang the nipple bottle over the inside of the door in the Eglu run, which would be a bit awkward: the sides of the run start to curve too much too soon. It's no good: you'll have to get a cube.
Cinnamon
I can't wait to get a nipple drinker. At the moment a couple of my hens perch on the edge of the Glug & make it just filthy. I think the new drinker is high enough to discourage that,& it looks like the smaller hole in the top will prevent woodchip getting kicked in too
Charlottechicken
Nipple drinkers are similar in concept to the bunny type water bottles in that they have a little ball that has to be licked to feed the water down. Ooh, I have a bunny bottle upstairs in storage, I will have to get it down now and try the girls with it, they always enjoy pecking water off the Eglu and the fencing anyway! My glug always looks like they've been washing their feet in it, but I reckon that seeing as they are happy to drink out of mucky puddles and drain covers, that a bit of muddy water in their glug won't harm them I think the puddle water must taste nicer Clare
Jaime
I have a "Bunny Bottle" on the side of the run and when I'm talking to the chooks I tap it so it drips and they go mad for the water.... Other times it sits there and they dont bother with it although the water always is fresh and much cleaner than the mess they make of the glub
Helly Welly
It seems like we all have the same problem with the glugs...maybe a design change is needed
SarahJo
Cheap option ... use an empty milk container .. simply cut below the handle .. so when you turn upside down there is a water vessel. Leave the cap on .. obviously and use a tie wrap aound the handle and run to secure, to empty just unscrew the cap, drain and then refill. . I used this simple drinker when I intruduced new chooks .. so water was available on both sides of the divider in the run .
