Can Toys Stand The Test of Time?

Recommended Posts

To echo a BBC story concerning the Christmas toys left abandoned forever after the initial interest:

My parents were quite poor and I was given a life size baby doll when I was 7 but I had dismembered it by the end of the day. My mother repaired her, kept her and gave her to me on my 40th birthday. Strangely poignant It is one of my most prized possessions now.

What did you hate and never played with and what have you kept to this day?

I had a Bunny, knitted by my Mum,who I loved more than anything on this earth. he wore blue shorts & a hand made white cotton top.

He was regularly taken apart & laundered,& his lovely Bunny face was squished flat where I lay my head on him every night.

On a trip to Poole & accidently dropped him into the sea & Dad paid a local to go in & get him for me,as I was quite hysterical in case I never saw him again

He eventually came apart, but my Mum knitted me another & gave it to me on out wedding day. She (for she is the female version of my boy bunny,& wears a flowery frock) sits on my dressing table now,& is one of my most treasure possessions :D

I still have a go at Lego now if there is any about 8)

I didn't like dolls either and those that I did have had their hair cut and spent most of their time in a corner. I still have a couple of my teddies including my first ever little bear who's spikey eye fell out the first day that I got him as a baby. He was finally given a little felt eye when I glued one on and repaired his smile when I was a teenager.

I also have one of my mum's bears with 2 jumpers both knitted by her when she was young. My OH has his favourite bear too from his childhood.

My DS has some Lego that belonged to both me and my OH when we little too.

The toys that my children still have from their babyhood are a Snowman, a donkey and a rabbit, I suspect they will keep those for ever.

Never ever played with dolls. Still have my Teddy Bears, wearing their knitted pullovers. :D

I had dolls and a walking talking doll and all the clothes came off and were put on teddy who came with me everywhere - he is 57 shortly as my aunt gave me him when I was born - he sat too close to the fire one xmas and scorched and my poor mum had to repair him with a yellow duster so he sits in my bedroom still - hated the dolls.

My kids had lego and it stands the test of time too.

I still have my teddy-bear, rather battered - an unusual white sheepskin bear, much beloved.

Pride of place on my kitchen dresser goes to Teddy-on-a-Bicycle. He was a present for (I think) my 3rd Christmas, and he's a stuffed teddy on a little red tricycle - I loved him on sight and was in despair when on Boxing Day my brother trod on the axle and broke it. Mum took it into the local garage where they welded it back together, and he's been pedalling happily ever since. I'll post a photo later if I can! I couldn't think where else to keep him, and he looks rather nice on the dresser (I think).

Not having any children of my own, my other childhood toys were mostly redistributed to nephews and nieces; my SIL still has my Miniature Garden for her grandchildren I believe, a much-loved childhood toy. As a family we still play board games at family get-togethers - Risk, Cluedo and Buccaneers are still the original ones, missing a few pieces by now.

I have a very battered and much repaired rabbit that my Dad bought for me when I was born. He is so fragile he has to live in a cupboard and is covered in gauze bandages to stop the stuffing falling out. Mr W has long since realised that rabbit will stay and has given up trying to fling it out.

LMW has a rabbit and a monkey that were bought for her when she was a baby and seem to get smuggled into the luggage whenever we go away!

I still have some of the books I was given as a child and LMW has been reading them.

Like many others - my teddy! And also like others, dolls never really figured... Didn't see the point of them!

Lego certainly has stood the test of time - and some books and board games. Can't think of much else though.... And I KNOW I nagged my parents for all sorts of things, things I apparently couldn't live without - but have long since been disbanded and now can't remember any of them!

Mum tended to pass on our toys to younger relatives when we'd outgrown them. We stopped her passing on a dolls house that I treasure. I'd planned to pass it on to a daughter to play with but only have boys. My dad made it one christmas when they didn't have much money and you can see where he ran out of time and forgot to cut the kitchen door. So much work and love went into it 8)

It needs renovating, if we ever finish the main house I'll do the dolls house

He also made a wooden farm that I wish we'd been able to keep.

Well i have my ED fischer price village and camper van, she is 38yrs just now.She got it aged 2 for christmas.

She played with it, her sister 8 yrs later played with it as did her Aunt who is 2 yrs older than DD, her cousins and friends have played with it.

Now her children play with it as do her nieces and visiting friends children. All the pieces are still with it and it is still robust.I wonder who will get to play with them next ?
