poopy bottom * in chick

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, we have just rescued a little chick (from a neighbours nephew) not sure how old it is. (We have 3 hens already but they were a few weeks old so already had their proper feathers.) This little one is still fluffy, except for the wings which are lovely and white feathers. We have absolutely no idea about it's history. It eats and drinks well, it has a lamp to keep it warm. but since yesterday it has developed a poopy bottom. which is going under it's tummy. when i tried to clean it up today it was very hard/dried on and i was stressing the poor thing out trying to clean it, so i gave it up as a bad job. Is it ok? should i persevere with the cleaning? it was cleaning itself but obviously not very well. any advice please?

Also would anyone be able to tell me what breed it is, if i post a photo when it's older and has full feathers?

many thanks .

It sounds like Pasted Vent, which is quite serious. You need to clean it away regularly, so that it doesn't become obstructed internally. Use cotton eye make up remover pads moistened with saline. Soften the faeces thoroughly. Be careful and don't be tempted to pick when the faeces are dry, as it is easy to damage the chick.

Unfortunately the outcome with this condition is not always good.

Diet - I'd keep it on just chick crumbs, water and a tiny sprinkling of chick grit for now.

Thanks for the advice, i will do that now. I didnt want to get her too wet or stress her out too much not knowing what kind of 'short' history she has. (well i'm assuming it's a girl) she's very happy and chirpy. How long should i keep her under the lamp? She is in the kitchen at the moment, and how old before i 'introduce' her to my 3 girls? One of them is quite a bossy little madam!

To be honest i've no idea. she was about the size of a tennis ball when we got her and we've had her for 6 days. My other girls were 8-9 weeks when we got them so not had any experience with such young chicks. she's very fast! she follows my daughter round the kitchen like a little wind up toy! she chirps alot but my hubby says thats probably cos she's lonely. It's quite nice waiting to see what she'll turn out like. She is showing white feathers on her wings, a tiny white stumpy tail and now some feathers around the 'shoulders' she is very cute. :)

Was s/he hatched on its own?

Not very old (couple of weeks?) if its still fluffy - keep it on just chick crumb and water to try and get things right - is that what its been on before now?

I think there is something about the temp of the water they drink that can cause it - I think its if they drink cold water but don't quote me 'cos could have made that up!

I had it with one one of my CLB chicks and used kitchen roll and soaked it with warm water. If you pull too hard you pull feathers out + end up giving them a bit of a wax! :anxious:

Will need to stay in the brooder for a good long time at this time of year and then even longer before s/he can go in with your 3 hens ... may be an idea to think about getting another one, if it makes it :D

this is my new little girl.... I've called her puppy-chick because i have been wanting to get a puppy but she came first!! Dont think my other half had any intentions of getting me a puppy anyway. Too many pets as it is  The kids have called her mortisha, cos she tweets the tune to the Addams family!

My son is holding her in the first piccy, on the day we got her, and my daughter has her on her knee a few days later. the one of her on her own was on the day we got her. . We are taking pictures of her every 2 days to see how she grows.

Ah Ha! I guessed about a week. goodness me she, it's no wonder she's lonely! I will put on another piccy when she's older and maybe someone can tell me what breed she is. Had a go at cleaning her up yesterday, not a happy chicky, but we're getting there.

Good luck with her and at your son's hair - most girls would kill for those blonde curls

I know! it's really long. He loves it! wont let me near him with a pair of scissors, only to trim it
