Luvachicken
I just read on another thread that hybrids lay more eggs than pure breeds over the winter, but my two gingernuts haven't laid a single egg since before Christmas. I've had to resort to buying eggs from the shop and they really don't taste as nice. My girls are only just over 2 yrs old - my hubby thinks they are past it - but are they too old now ? oneyolktoanother
no they are not too old mine have had a break since christmas as its been so cold, as soon as it warms up they should start laying again
percy049
they dont seem old enough to stop laying eggs - although it will be reduced by about 25 eggs a year than last year. they should start laying again, as it is getting warmer and lighter. have you been feeding them more corn and treats over the winter, becuase this might contribute to eggs being layed later
Luvachicken
Yes, percy049, I did feel sorry for them when it was really cold and so gave them a bowl of porridge oats mixed with warm water before they went to bed. Also one girlie was going through a really bad moult and had lost a bit of weight which she has now put back on but they haven't had so much recently, just a little handful of mealworms when I remeber. majuka
We're eggless here at the moment too. This is our third winter of having hens and the first time we have been without eggs for so long. Our local saddlery shop has a large flock of ex batt hens so have brought some eggs from them. We must have looked odd buying a bag of layers pellets and then someone else's hens eggs!
