TheFeatheredFiend
FINALLY got the electric fence up and working, and wasn't THAT a pain in the tailfeathers! We ordered a complete set up from Forsham Cottage Arks at the same time that we ordered our Eglu, expecting it all to arrive at about the same time for a fun day of assembly and setting up ready for our hens. Two days later, no dispatch note from Forsham and three days later, no fence kit. A call to Forsham was answered with, "well it was sent, it should be with you by now, we'll find out what's happened and phone you back." No phone call was forthcoming. Next day I called again, same answer, same result. Getting annoyed now. Next day they changed the line to "This kit is sent directly from manufacturer, We've contacted them and are awaiting a reply, we'll call you later once we know more." Needless to say, they didn't. Another call to them, and again they said they were waiting for the manufacturer, Hotline, to contact them. "Hotline?" I said, "But the fence I ordered is made by Rutland, not Hotline!" "Ah, that'll be why Hotline can't find the order then." The bloke at Forsham said, "I'll find out what happened to your fence and call you back." "promise you'll call us back? You never have before!" "I Promise." ..... They didn't call. Next day, the OH called then again to be told that they don't stock the Rutland fences any more and it shouldn't be on the website and would we like a refund? 'YES!' So, bottom line, It took a week and a total of eight phone calls to tell us they don't stock the thing we'd ordered any more. Arg! It's possibly our own fault because their website is so badly put together and chock full of errors that it should have rung alarm bells. For example It says they don't sell leisure batteries 'because they're too expensive to ship' on the same page where it lists leisure batteries with a price including free shipping. It lists items they don't stock any more and right across the site it quotes VAT at 17.5%. Their customer service is awful and they NEVER return calls. Anyhoo, we ordered a hotline kit from Flyte So Fancy which arrived next day (THAT'S how it's done, Forsham!) and the OH and I put it together. It soon became clear that because of the terrible uneveness of our garden we were going to need a lot more posts. We ordered more from the same place and when they arrived added them to the fence. Much better. We also used plastic strips under the bottom fence edges to prevent the grass from shorting it out. Works a treat. Finally, we could let the girls out to stretch their legs and they LOVE it. Here's some pictures. This is a shot of the Eglu set up positioned within the leccy fence. We decided to put it as far from the fence as possible to prevent the chooks from jumping from the eglu roof and over the fence. Here's Helga the Bielefelder inspecting the daffs: Hennifer (Blue Orp), Mrs Featherbottom (Buff Orp) and Helga enjoying the grass: Despite all the freeranging space, when the sun came out everyone retired back to the run to dustbathe. Here's Diva and Misty ( Bluebelle): And here's Suzie doing her best impression of a ceramic chicken egg-bowl cover: But the warm sun soon lulled her into a nice snooze: Sleep well, Suzie. Finally, here's Nigel Pilkington our resident wild pheasant paying his daily visit. The fence wasn't finished when this was taken, I hope he doesn't get too much of a shock when he visits next time! Thanks for looking and putting up with my rant. PS: Don't bend over to pick something up and accidentally touch a 10000v electric fence with your nose. it HURTS! Daphne
Hope your nose is OK Sorry you had such a performance getting your electric fence. If anyone else is reading this in the South and wants an alternative quote to Flytes of Fancy we've just ordered another electric fence and energiser from a firm called Farmcare in Sussex. I'm not sure what it cost, but OH ordered it this Tuesday lunchtime and it was delivered here 07.30am on Wednesday! The good news is that leccy fences do work, so you and your girls should have some safe as well as happy ranging

LeeMeadfan
I love the one of Helga inspecting the daffs Mine have been 'inspecting' some crocuses - so much so that they have pecked the stalks down to the ground Oh and left random crocus heads laying round the garden (I'm in Suffolk too!) Chortle Chook
I love your pictures. Super garden - makes me I know you went through it with Forsham but the way you wrote it was very funny. Your poor nose I've always wanted one of the mega expensive Forsham dovecotes - no more. Good on Flytes So Fancy who have been good to us too. We have a lovely sandpit / dustbath from them. Lavenders_Blue
Well done with the electric fence. What a super pen your girls have now! Rutland Electric Fencing is just down the road from me, I wonder if you can order directly from their website? By the way, Forsham customer service is rubbish, I had some problems ordering woodsealer from them last year which only got resolved two months later when I filed a chargeback from my credit card company Did the same as you and ordered from Flyte instead, their customer service is FAB! TheFeatheredFiend
Does Helga lay blue eggs? she looks the right colour to do so.She hasn't started laying yet and information about the Bielefelder breed seems difficult to come by. (unless you can read German!) I guess we'll wait and see!just wondering where abouts in Suffolk you are I'm in Suffolk too! We're in a little village just north of Ipswich, near Debenham.what you have used on their roof ?That's a 2mx3m 'glass clear' PVC tarpaulin from Toolspot held on with Omlet bungee hooks. Fits an Eglu run with two extensions perfectly!
