SarahJo
Yep ... I am finally getting a 3rd hen to add to my , and have even coersed another Mum from the boys school to come and get some chooks too. . Don't panic .. Martina does have a wooden coop at home, and her 2 adopted little girls want to have hens again. SO ... off to Sam, in Kingsley straight after the school drop, and with Kiennah, the little 2 yr old, to choose 1 chook for me, and 2 for her. Martina wants a Bluebell, and a RIR ... but I will work on her to get an Amberstar too, and have the 3 at once . Roll of wire is at the ready to divide the run, once again, and I will keep you posted as to what we come home with ... and how many. Lesley
You'll need another egg-rack Sarah!
SarahJo
Only one more day of being a 2 chook household , we are going tomorrow, Monday ......can't wait . The holder from Scotts, hold 12 eggs Lelsey, and the boys eat an almost every day for brekky, so I should have enough room on the spiral. Thing is ... if I don't fill the holder, does that mean another and even more chooks. . Keeping up with you and Sheila is sooooo hard. Lesley
Of course! you have to aspire to be a 'two Eglu family' now!
SarahJo
O.K ... run is now set for new girl arriving tomorrow, and I have taken some pics for you to see my "brainwave" ideas. . I put the roll of mesh over as a divider, and then used the top part of a milk carton for a water holder. Idea here, is you just unscrew the cap, and then refill with water . Also, and ice-cream tub ... to be fixed with tie wraps .. and then just replace the lid at night to keep out any unwanteds. . Both the water and the mash, will be located near to the dividing fence again, so the girls can be acquinted. Ginger and Mrs Snowy, can even drink out of the same water pot, and have been admiring my stroke of genius. .

SarahJo
Home now ...... we bought back 4 chooks in total. Mine is a Starlight ... who is VERY black, and has feathered feet. . She is making a bit of a racket in the run, so hope she settles quickly as Graham is on a night shift tonight. . Martina got a Ranger (ginger with white tail), a Bluebell, and I finally convinced her to get a 3rd, so she chose and AMBERSTAR . When we got back here, I clipped all their wings ( one of each bird ), and took pics, which I shall go and post now. . Starlight ... not named yet ... will let you know later. SarahJo
By the way ... thanks to Sam, at Gareden Poultry, for excellent help as usaual. He also mentioned a new breed for next year ... Jasmine, which will be a Cream legbar cross, to lay lots of blue eggs, and not be so broody
Cate in NZ
wonderful news Sarah, I can't wait to see the pics . I hope the Starlight settles in well with the other 2, have they shown much interest in her? Do keep us updated with names etc, I'll be watching this thread with interest I like the sound of the Jasmine too, I'm determined to get a blue egg, eventually, somehow. Since my Cream Legbar isn't playing the game, a Jasmine might be the answer
Nicola H
Well done Sarah hope all goes well with the introductions........I saw the Jasmine in Practical Poultry she looks lovely I may be tempted as Bunty hasn't layed an egg for 3 months I am also missing my blue eggs.... Lesley
Congratulations Sarah - she sounds lovely. Did they say what age she is? The Jasmine does sound good - we haven't had any blue eggs for two weeks not but Ellie is moulting.
Louise
Saw the pics before I saw this thread and I thought that is Sarah with Ginger and Mrs snowy but the person in the pics threw me. Then I came back and found the thread. All of them are gorgeous sarah sooooooooooooooo jealous I want a mark II Eglu and another load of chooks but alas not practical at the moment so never mind enjoy and I hope you get loads of nice eggs between you. What colour eggs does your new chook lay
SarahJo
Thanks for the chook well wishes . Thought she had flown the nest already this-afternoon, as could not see her in the run ..... thats because she wasn't . I heard her cooing .. looked up and saw her in the hawthorn hedge, perched on branch . Uncerimoniously dragged her backwards ... before she flew forwards into the rear neighbours garden, and then set about making an extra "canopy" of mesh. . She has remained in-situ since, and eaten and drank, and seems happy enough ... just 1st bedtime to do now . Hopefully she will lay dark choc coloured 's as she is a Marans X, so even though not as many 's as the other 2, they will be distinctive. SarahJo
Just done the "Bedtime" brush run ..... new girl was not too impressed, but seemed better after a cuddle and a chat. Posted her through the front door and listened. Then opened the eggport to check .... Ginger was in the nest and Mrs Snowy was adjusting position for the new girl. Will do a sneaky check with torch later to check alls well .... but so far ....... .

Sheilaz
I'm so happy I could burst! That's brilliant news SarahJo. Glad Martina had a successful excursion too. Yes, I think Starlights must like bushes (esp. if prickly/thorny ), but glad to hear you managed bedtime so well. Oooh...I'd like a Jasmine or 2....one day, not sure you should have told me about them! Very best wishes for the next few days settling in.
SarahJo
Now you tell me about bushes and the Starlights .... . Sheila ... does your Starlight have grey, feathery feet . The 1st hen Sam caught, he thought was a Starlight ... but then he said "check the legs and feet" apparently if they are not grey and feathery they are more likely to be a B.Nera. The other thing with the new girl, is that she has "hidden" ginger feathers on her neck .. they are not as prominent as the Nera's ... and she is definately BLACK. forgot to tell ... checked with a torch. Mrs Snowy facing back of Eglu, New Girl in middle (facing door) and Ginger snug in the nest. Looks like the newbie is settled right in the middle then .... SarahJo
Update for today ... have decided to call her Ebony (sorry WendyHyde), as she is sooo black, and Joe would not budge to Pepsi, Jet or Flame . Today .. after a seemingly peaceful night in the , she has enjoyed breakfast, a light salad (tossed into the run ) for lunch, and a lesson in dustbathing from Ginger and Mrs Snowy. . They are desperate to get into each others side of the run .. but will have to wait till Thursday, when I may take the border fence down . Martina's 3 are well .... she eventually caught the escaped ginger hen at 8.50pm, and says all 3 appeared to be sulking, as none of them were "free" today. . Will keep you posted on her hens progress ... the Bluebell, if not in lay is very close. My little Ebony is about 3 weeks off.
