Plants that succumbed to the bad weather

Recommended Posts

My neighbour hates hebes and has successfully taken out several monster specimens in his garden. I tried to take out 2 smaller ones (about 3 ft x 2 ft) about 5 years old in my front garden, lopped off most of the branches leaving a small framework that I could could get to grips with lifting. I failed miserably to dislodge them from the hard packed soil so had to leave them. They came back very quickly  so you might be lucky if you go the drastic pruning route :D Actually, come to think of it, I also did this with a 4 ft x 4 ft specimen as well, and it survived very well - I was trying to get it to have more red flushed leaves on new growth.

oh that's good news - as I have already done the hard pruning this morning on the theory that if it pegs it I could get to grips with removing it!! it looks better already, as I am starting to be able to get in to the bed to do some (much-needed) weeding. I HATE weeding, I'm not very good at it.

Had a nice surprise today, whilst cleaning out the pot my little bay tree was in. Discovered four shoots coming up from the roots  It's been repotted in a smaller pot, and I've cut all the dead bits off, which was all of the actual bay tree  Now I'm hoping I can shape the new growths, when they are big enough, into something resembling a standard bay tree!

my neighbour told me this morning that she had lost 17 hebes. 17!!!! she's only got a little garden...

off to cut my fuchsias back hard today - the wind has picked up so tho till lovely sunshine it is cool enough to garden.

edit: yay!!! there are little fuchsia stems poking up from the ground - had to cut out an awful lot of dead wood tho.

In teresting, I was gardening the other day and found some casualties - thought it was my neglect (strange because they are always neglected!) but it probably was the weather! Lost a lovely big rosemary, and an Australian Bottlebrush that flowered beautifully every year! Both completely dead :(

snowy, I've lost a bottlebrush too - very sad, I'd had it about 6 or 7 years and when I put it in I was told it probably wouldnt survive. so I guess it had a good innings...

It is now!

I chucked it out there a week or so ago, with a view to throwing it away,& it has suddenly sprung into life

Oddly my other Lemon, which was doing beautifully, lost every single leaf it had in the space of 3 hours (I went out,it was fine,I came back,it was naked), & has now gone into blossom.

No, they are in my unheated south facing glass porch.

They are both young plants & I have only had the one that dropped its foliage for a few months,so I am not sure if it got too cold at night for it or something :?

Very odd though - there was a massive pile of greenery on the windowsill & floor, all nice a green & fresh, not crispy or anything :?

I am relieved to say that my favourite fuschia is showing signs of life, I really thought it had gone this year. I am a bit sentimental about it because it was nearly destroyed by my old cat having a fight with the neighbourhood bully about 6 months before she died, she was a fiesty girl and both the other cat and the fuschia came off worse than she did and she was nearly 19 at the time. I see it as a final link to her :D
