poppy ben grace
Hi all, didnt think i would be back so soon with another poorly girl. my bluebell has(i think) an impacted crop. She has a hard lump and is not herself at all. She is drinking ok but has taken herself to bed early.Have just massaged her crop and will give her some warm olive oil, just wondered how much to give and is this ok? I know this is common but want to help her, any advice would be great. Cant get hold of any maggots untill tomorrow. so stressed, only just lost one of my girls and am having to have my horse pts soon that i have owned for 23 years. Not a good day. sandyhas3chucks
hard lump? bit more description might help.... It should be full at night, make sure she is drinking lots if it is impacted I "think" 2ml several times a day is recommended but liquid parafin next would be better as it is not absorbed into the system, oil great to start with thou. Wait and see how she is n the morning, might have a softee or an egg backed up, that would/might put the crop in stasis
Guest
are you sure it's her crop? some people have mistaken the crop for the bone that protrudes from the breast. what has she been eating? has she eaten anything that could have caused an impacted crop or a blockage? check her again first thing in the morning to see if she still has a full crop and if you are sure it is actually an impacted crop then try a gentle massage after carefullly giving her a little olive oil/veg oil to loosed the blockage. You could try maggots but if it's your first time dealing with impacted crop i'd take her to the vet so they can show you/advise you what to do. poppy ben grace
Hi, wrong diagnoses(what an idiot) its def SOUR crop. have just masaged her crop and tipped her foward and she burped and was "sick" a few times. Smelt gross, thats why they call it sour crop i guess. OH has just gone to get live yoghurt from tessco and we have some boskhi bran aswell. Is this ok? should i try and empty her crop anymore? Thankyou so much for your help.
Guest
i wouldn't try and empty it, it might go into her air sacs and cause an infection. Just try with the yoghurt first. Someone will post a link to advice on sour crop in a mo I'm sure....

The Dogmother
Live yoghurt and Bokashi Bran works well, plus ACV in the water. I don't advise that you try to empty the crop - chickens don't have a gag reflex and can easily inhale it. Good luck
poppy ben grace
Thanks Clare, do you think i should isolate her tomorrow and just give her water and the yoghurt?
The Dogmother
I would, keep her off regular feed for 36 hours, then when she's back on her pellets, keep her off greens, treats and fruit for at least a week. Try to isolate her where she can still see the others so that you don't have any problems re-introducing her.

Bramble
Hello! Just wanted to sympathise really, I am in the same position with one of my Ex-batts, I'm sure she has sour crop, so it's live yoghurt, bokashi, ACV and massages. Didn't feel too badly about it yesterday as I was working at home so could be there to keep an eye, but back in the office today but wishing I was back home. My little girl seemed much quieter this morning than yesterday and really didn't want to eat the yoghurt etc I put for her, so I'm much less optimistic than I was, though I gather they can and do recover from sour crop? So sorry to hear about your horse, that's unimaginable, sending you a big hug.
poppy ben grace
Thankyou, hope your girl gets better soon, its hard as we can only help them so much i guess...
poppy ben grace
Update, she seems to have done a poo that had a long grass like part to it about 4/5 inches long, am hoping she has passed somthing that might have caused a blockage. She is not happy in her cage but she is in the run with the others so not alone. Just hoping for the best now!
Bramble
That sounds promising, fingers crossed My little one is an ex-batt which possibly counts against her in the survival stakes, but hoping she'll be ok.
poppy ben grace
Bless her, its even harder with the ex batts i think. I lost one a couple of weeks ago. It was awful as she only had a couple of months of freedom, but i guess that was better than nothing at all. They are little fighters though(they have had to be!) so lets hope your little girl pulls through! Keep us posted!
sandyhas3chucks
Don't want to sound like the bringer of doom, but i would jusyt like to say that sur crop is serious and it can kill them. If it doesn't respond immediately at home to treatments then a vet is needed. If they are doing odd head movements(like break neck dances) they really DO need to emptied but every care MUST be taken. I have heard of maggots also helping sour crop as they eat the vile goop too.
poppy ben grace
Another update. She has been eating the yoghurt but is still not right.Gave her some nutri drops earlier and shes been drinking. crop feels squishy. How long until i try the vet? My vets are pretty useless when it comes to chickens but would rather have her pts than leave her in pain. any advice would be great. Feel so upset. The Dogmother
I'd give her 24 hours from onset then take her to the vet. Can you phone around the vets in your area to see if one knows anything about chickens? It will be useful for the future as well as now.
