CatsCube
Can anyone recommend a good dandruff shampoo? I always found head and shoulders the only shampoo to really shift it, but recently I don't know if they have changed it and stuck all the silicone rubbish in it but I find I have scummy powdery build up on my scalp even straight after washing even though I don't use any styling products. Any suggestions?
Olly
I'd move to an organic shampoo, or at least one that doesn't have SLS in it. It might take a while to get used to as your hair won't feel 'squeaky' clean, but I've found my hair and scalp are much better since I gave up traditional shampoo. Cinnamon
Lush do a good one - can't remember what its called though
CatsCube
I have used SLS free shampoos before and I find they make my hair rather claggy, like I cant wash it out properly and I do like a lather.
Reikiranf
Mop C System clean shampoo or Aveda Shampure is good, DH had what we thought was terminal dandruff for over 20 years and we tried every shampoo on the market, they seemed to work for a few days and then he was back to square one But since we've been getting shampoo without sodium laureth sulphate (sles) or sodium lauryl sulphate (sls) he's had no flakes at all for years now. So it was obviously that causing the flakes by irritating his scalp and not dandruff at all.
CatsCube
Thats interesting, do either of those two you listed still give a lather though, as thats the main thing that SLS shampoos are used for, when I have tried SLS free ones before they have felt really thick, like I cant properly get it all around my hair and scalp cause its just sitting on it like a thick lump. The Dogmother
I use Aveda Shampure (bought by a friend from the US at good discount I hasten to add!) and it foams well, cleans my hair beautifully and smells divine. Faith in Nature shampoos are good too.
Bramble
Polytar is ACE and smells divine (heavenly tar smell )
Reikiranf
As Claret says the Shampure lathers up really well, the C System you do have to add more water as you lather up the shampoo. I think it's a bit of a psychological barrier though as we don't feel that our hair is clean unless the shampoo has lathered up well, but it isn't actually necessary for a shampoo to lather up to get your hair clean
CatsCube
I think I will give that Shampure a go, where can you get it from? can I buy it on the high street or do I need to mail order it. The lather thing I think is just cause it makes for finer particles so gets around the hair shafts more, particularly as I have very thick hair. Its like when I dye my hair, due to a PPD allergy I have to use henna and I find it a nightmare to get it all around the hair and down to the roots. And why a lot of home hair dyes are now turning to mouse dyes as it dyes more evenly as its finer and is less likely to leave patches compared to a cream. Reikiranf
You can buy it online or from large department stores that have an Aveda counter in them, you can also get Shampure conditioner, but I'm not as keen on that as I find I often get flyaway hair with it & have to use other products afterwards. abwsco
Philip KIngsley does one for itchy flaky scalp. Think QVC is good value for the kits.
Blackrocksrock
Also rinsing with diluted cider vinegar is great for your scalp = mine tends to get itchy spots and I am always picking and this really helps and no dandruff either.
CatsCube
Really? Isnt cider vinegar a bit drying on the hair?
Cinnamon
Just a thought - I put loads of T-Gel through my till at work.................its supposed to be very good
chickenNutter
You could also try Nizoral. Apparently dandruff is not always caused by a dry scalp, it can be caused by yeast (similar to cradle cap in babies) which causes your scalp to over prooduce skin cells. My son had this and just using it once or twice a week, using a normal shampoo the rest of the time solved the problem. Worth a try?
The Dogmother
Some hair salons stock Aveda, or they have a shop/salon in High Holborn if you're over that way. I am sure that they might do mail order from that store if you call them up. Shampure last for ages too - I get the big 1 litre bottle and it lasts me about a year. soapdragon
I can confirm that Faith in Nature is fab- havn't used anything else for about 5 years! They do several different types but my OH uses the Rosemary one for dandruff; a marked improvement! You could also try rubbing a little pure Rosemenry essential oil into your scalp about 10 to 15 mins before shampooing (but if you have sensitive skin probably best to dilute in a carrier ( sorry, not bag but base oil like sweet almond, coconut etc!) OH found this effective too! Good luck!
