52fish
What are Sussex like to keep? Would one fit in readily with a small mixed flock? Any other comments, thoughts or tips? Thanks!
Egluntyne
I have a Light Sussex and a Speckled Sussex. They are both lovely. The Light Sussex is the head hencho and the Speckled is as daft as a brush.
lindafw
I have a buff Sussex part of a mixed flock of 2 Dorkings and a buff Orpington hen. They are loved and watched over by Baggins the buff Orpington cockerel. She is the smallest of the flock and is Baggins best girl! She is friendly and a super bird
52fish
So tempting... the 3 ladies are going on holiday next weekend. Would be a real shame if an extra chicken hopped in the box on the way back
Salop Chuck
I have a Light Sussex mixed in with 3 bantams (1 Australorp and 2 Buff Rocks). She is very docile and an absolute darling and in spite of being head hen, watches out for the bantams who snuggle under her fluffy pantaloons during cold nights in the winter. She is a superb egg-layer and is such a comical character that she makes me laugh every day .
migsy
I have a Light Sussex. She is heavier than my hybrids and looks nice and chunky. She is placid and no problem to look after.
Old Hazel
We have 6 light Sussexes. They are still quite young, not laying yet but they are already bigger than my other girls. They are all quite easy-going and placid. They are nicely chunky! Hazel
beach chick
I've always had at least 1 sussex in my flock (4 years now?). lovely girls, really quite hefty, but good reliable layers and all seem to have quite calm temperaments. I'd say go for it.
jennydavies
Our Light Sussex, Blanche, is a lovely temperament and a suberb egg-layer. She is docile, friendly and happy to cuddle each day.
poachedegg
We have a Buff and a Speckled Sussex, both are chunky girls and fit in well with a mixed flock of 9 in total of hybrids, ex batts & Pure Breeds. Both lovely to look at.
Henhathnofury
The Sussex is a great breed: hardy, calm and will tolerate being confined. My Light Sussex is smaller than a lot of them I have seen, but that's because my Speckled Sussex ate all the pies! She is enormous and something of a nazi - but it seems that she is not typical. We just have an odd girl. They are both really professional egg-layers.
sadietoo
I am totally in love my light Sussex, she has such a lovely temperament, honks like a goose, lays reliably and has those gorgeous fluffy knickers too...she's a pretty hefty girl, with the emphasis on pretty...... 52fish
I'm convinced... have spoken to the breeder and our 3 chickens will return from their weekend vacation with a Sussex. Now just need to find the right time to tell the wife
billathome65
I have a Sussex Star and she is with a Black Rock and both live happily together.
52fish
Dropped off our 3 chickens for their holiday, picked out the Sussex who went straight in with our 3 and they all managed to get on with life without a fuss - no pecking - they just ignored each other and went off exploring. All 4 will return on Sunday
zakjon-98
I have two Sussex in my mixed flock and they're great. They lay an egg almost every day, are so tame and easy to look after.
