Guest
We planted an apple tree up at the top of the garden about a fortnight ago, and despite following the instructions for planting and watering, it's now looking pretty bedraggled. The leaves are drooping, and some have turned brown. Any suggestions for something that would perk it up again?
theherd123
You could add some blood, fish & bone to give it a boost
Guest
blood????!!!
Olly
don't panic, you don't have to go out and find a victim! 'blood-fish-and-bone' meal is a fertiliser that you buy in powdered form. Are you sure it was planted deeply enough, and could it be lacking in water? (she says bitterly, looking out of the window at the pouring rain)
Lesley
You could add some blood, fish & bone to give it a boost What a strange recommendation from a vegetarian! It sounds like lack of water - but after the recent weather, I doubt it
Guest
We've been watering it faithfully, as depsite the rain, the soil here is always dry, as there is always a drying breeze rattling around the garden. I'll get some 'blood, fish and bone' meal, and up the watering (despite the chucking rain that we have again today!)
Guest
Chookiehubbie rather eluctantly went off to the garden centre yesterday, with instructions to ask for the blood, fish and bone meal, convinced that he was going to be arrested for gruesome crimes against apple trees...... Will give it a liberal sprinkling today, and hopefully that should perk it up a bit - thankyou!

Hee, hee. I can just imagine. He must have looked a bit worried when the bloke said calmly I'll find you some, or it's over there!
Snowy
Hope the apple tree recovers soon Chookie! Don't do what I did with the BF&B. Forgot about a part used bag that ended up at the back of the shed getting damp. When the first warm weather came it took us ages to find the source of the 'decaying flesh' smell! I know but in the name of saving a tree what else could i do? Does the tree look any better Shona or has it gone to the big orchard in the sky? Olly
ummm. I should warn you, that apparently sprinkling BF&B on your lawn is not a good idea - that is, it works wonders for the lawn, but foxes come along, and think something is buried there so they start digging ... It's probably ok round a tree, they won't do much damage there. I haven't had this experience myself, got enough trouble with the beastly fox without encouraging it! Guest
Oooo-errr......I'll bear that in mind - i don;t want to encourage foxes into the garden, with the Balamory Babes in residence. I've sprinkled a teeny bit around the tree, but it seems to have perked up already - we've upped the amount of watering we do, after a neighbour kindly pointed out that the drainage around here is excellent, while we are used to virtually no drainage in the last house, so we have probably not been watering enough. Martin B
Haven't got time to read everything but it definataely sounds like a lack of water.
ubereglu
Haven't got time to read everything but it definataely sounds like a lack of water. It shows it Martin! She's given it plenty of water. Shona, is it planted deep enough-someone else had a similar problem with one a few weeks back on Gardener's question time.

Martin B
Also, how did you plant the tree? Did you bung it straight in the ground or seperate the roots a bit, if the roots are heavily clumped together they may not be taking in the water. Plenty of water doesn't exist with trees, they will continue to soak it up, give it a few or more gallons a day.
Guest
It was all planted properly Martin - chookiehubbie likes to do things properly! I've upped the watering significantly, and it's all looking much, much perkier now - thankyou everyone for the advice!
