Hello,

I am looking for some inspiration. My 8 1/2 year old needs his room decorating, currently he has a lovely space rocket and robot theme which is fine, but he is beginning to think its a bit babyish. His room hasn't been decorated for 12 years and is looking tired, we just chucked some bedding in for him at the time, rather than redecorate. So as it needs repainting I thought I would treat him to some new bedding / curtains / theme. I want something that will last him till his teens, but its getting the balance so it isn't too old.

 

He loves climbing / skateboarding etc and I think that theme would do him for a while but there isn't much out there in the way of bedding, unless i want to import from USA. I have come across some cool skater wall stickers and stuff and i thought I could just get some plain bedding and go more with the accessories.

 

Has anyone any ideas, or has anyone been through this and has any pics?! All ideas gratefully received. I am planning on doing it at the start of the summer hols when he is at Granny and Grandads for a few days so I want to get planning.

Have you had a look on the IKEA website? There's a section called "youth rooms", which have lots of room ideas for teens. Maybe you could look at them for inspiration and create a room with a theme that will cross over from now and when he is in his teens?

I was inspired for a boys room by a picture in a magazine. The walls were chocolate brown, paintwork black, pine furniture & shelves & blue curtains. Sounds odd but it worked, when they had all their skateboards, helmets etc hanging on the walls with fishing rods etc it looked cool.

Have seen a few makeover programmes recently and a popular theme seems to be a graffiti art wall. I'm sure the local 'yoof' could give you a few ideas . Or maybe something like an army/camouflage theme - my son is really into that at the mo and you can get loads of accessories at a very reasonable price.

Next have "rock" themed stuff - personally I would try and remake old - so any old skate boards, take the trucks off and use as wall art, as someone else posted.

 

Sometimes if you google accesories you get some ideas - what about him on a board/climbing wall as photo collage?

 

YS has "silver" room - with silver/blue cabin bed. Like being in a rocket itself ES has steel blue with rock theme and own Cherry red electric guitar, both into swimming, surfing and boarding. So have pics of themselves, medal hooks and body boards hung up, skateboards, scooters and rip-sticks have kept their wheels so far

My DS who will be 13 in September wants to have a black room! We have compromised and he will have two walls black, two white, and the walls that are black will have white shelves and visa versa. His room is so small that to have it all black will make it look like a tiny tiny room that would only fit and elf! He has some role play weapons (latex swords and axes etc) which I am planning to put up on his wall which will hopefully look like they are in a medieval hall.

I like the ideas suggested so far here though. I would love to do a graffiti wall. So

Im gonna re-decorate my rooms next week. I painted a dinosaur theme, with an erupting volcano on one wall and fleeing dinosaurs with a prehistoric background for my YS aged 8. The rest of the room is cream and brown, with next dinosaur borders, curtains and duvet covers. I have next skeleton dinosaur lights. My OS room has a huge map of the world, flag bunting, globe lights and lots of photos from our holidays hanging from the ceiling. His walls are light and dark blue, he is 12 and very keen on travelling and it looks grown up! I love painting their rooms and have done transport with roads all round the wall, space huge planets and various other themes including lots of birds which took ages to paint!

We've recently decorated our two eldest son's room. We've just painted it yellow walls with dark blue skirting with stripey blue curtains. It's not all that big, so once all the furniture's in - eldest has a cabin bed with wardrobe & desk under - you can't see much of the walls. They've got a couple of posters - Dr Who & Toy Story. I figure it's the sort of colour that they won't grow out of, I can just change the bedding, at the moment they still have Thomas the Tank

I used to have thomas the tank bedroom! thomas wallpaper, border, bin, curtains, and a room full of my wooden thomas train set!

I would do what I did for my girls - let them choose a couple of funky duvet covers each & secorate around those,rather than going for a theme,which may be outgrown quickly.

 

One daughter,now 18 years old,loves aquq blue & chose a white duvet which I tie dyed blue,then we painted her walls aqua & I bought a HUGE tropical beach photo for her wall,which I framed. it is still appropriate for her a few years down the line & the room can be easily painted another colour to freshen it up again

I'm the same. Pick some colours from a duvet cover or favourite piece of clothing to work off and stick to basic stuff.

I've never done themes in my kids room because they seem to grow out of them so quickly. From word go boys room has been blue and turquoise (better than it sounds) and ds3s has been greens. DD loves pink though I have tried to tone it down, her walls were a very pale bluey green and white and it looked fab with the pink accents.

Worked when they were babies, would work when they are teens (if we hadn't moved)

Thanks for all that. i love the huge space mural, off to see if there is anything that DS would like. I also love the idea of hanging boards etc on wall. He has turned round to me this am and said he wants a climbing wall ..... not quite sure how to do that!

I saw a climbing wall in a kids bedroom recently - it was instead of a ladder for a top bunk and the hand holds were screwed into the wall next to the bed. Was quite good i thought.

we did a sea room for DS, where the walls were blue, and I potato printed bubbles up the walls, and just touched them up a bit to define them better!

For yours, what about a huge cork board or blackboard(frame from charity shop, balckboard paint from b+ q or the like.) then he can do his own scrawl!Or do a collage onto a lightwieght bit of ply, of skate mag pictures? he can then keep on layering!
