Kindle - to buy or not to buy?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone tried the newspaper subscriptions on Kindle? That seems like a really good idea, although you don't seem to be able to get i which is the paper I usually read (when I have a chance to buy one).

I gave OH a subscription to the Times for his birthday, he thought it was great, only problem finding the time to read it :lol:

Yes, I think that would be my problem too!

£89 Kindle report:

OH has opened it up, charged it and downloaded some books from our Amazon account. He's delighted!

it's very straightforward key use with a button to call up the screen keyboard. There is an overwhelming temptation to want to touch the screen when this comes up if you are a touch phone user, otherwise you use the 4-way rocker key to move the cursor to the correct letter or number on the keyboard for entering wifi password.

You can make the font size huge and can change the rotation of the screen too.

The home page is easy to navigate using the 4-way key and clicking in the centre of the button to accept.

downloading is instantaneous - remarkable to those of us new to Kindles!

I will probably get the electric socket charger for him too to take when he's away but everything I read says it will hold it's charge for yonks!

He's reading away on it at the mo...

It's dead easy to use and I'm going to get one for my mother in the States. I was going to wait to get her the touch version but i think she'd be more rather than less confused by it.

Thanks Laurmurf, that is brilliant. Thank you for the report! :D

Does it only come with a usb charger then? :?

My wifi Kindle came with a plug/usb charger...and yes, the charge lasts for weeks!

We're off to the US shortly; I believe Kindles are about 50% of the UK price - before we go mad and get 2, can anyone think of a reason not to buy one there?

The wall plug charger would not be a UK one - I am sure you could buy a spare over here though. Can't think of any other problems unless you can't put a US Kindle on a UK Amazon account?

The only reasons I can think of are that they may be linked in some way to the US Amazon site, & they will have US chargers???

That's what I was thinking but also, what if something goes wrong with it? I have just got mine and if anything goes wrong, I will contact Amazon UK. Who would you be able to contact or return it to if you have purchased it in the States? It might not be a problem at all but I would check out consumer rights and warranties just to be sure

Mmmm, you've all got me VERY tempted now ...

Reckon I'd want to hold out for the 3G version (other posts have said it's worth the extra, and I have patchy connection problems too!!!) so I'm thinking I might wait 'til after Christmas, in the hope they might come down in price again? Or am I just being mean ...

Then again, do I hold out for a Kindle Fire (though they don't seem to be due for release anytime soon ...

It is seriously the best thing I have bought in the last 2 years & I never thought that I would move away from reading paperbacks.

I too am tempted by the Fire, but I need to research it a bit more first.....it is the thought of colour which is appealing to me,as I do miss my bright book covers.

3G one is quite a lot more expensive though I'd hate to get the wi-fi one to find that I wish I'd held out for 3G ...

That's what worries me, Cinnamon, I struggle with the concept of not having a book to hold with proper pages to turn ... :anxious:

I did too,& it does take a little getting used to (I still sometimes try to physically turn the page)....but that is because the reading experience is SO book like.

I have, just now, cleared my bookshelf of old paperbacks & they are all stacked up awaiting the arrival of the nice man from Oxfam tomorrow :P

I just hope he has a big car...........................

Oooh, well done!

I've set myself a rule that I'm not allowed to keep paperbacks that I buy - don't have easy access to a library, so I try where possible to only buy books second hand/from Charity shops/or "on special" and then send them straight back to the Charity Shop when I've finished them. It sort of works, BUT I do tend to forget what I've read and what I haven't ...

I absolutely love my kindle. I got it from John Lewis in the end, they seem to be the same price wherever you get them from. Loads of books on Amazon and they download unbelievably quickly. Easier to browse the selection on a proper computer rather than the device so I wouldn't bother with the 3G version. The book prices depend on what you want to read - loads of free stuff which is often a bit rubbish but plenty of decent stuff for under a quid. I've only had books so far, mostly fiction. Fabulous on holiday as it really doesn't glare in the sun, unlike a lot of other ereaders. Also I've recently started to wear reading glasses (getting old!) but on holiday I wore my normal sunglasses and just increased the font size on the kindle. The kindle cover with the built in light (runs off the kindle battery) isn't cheap but works really well and because it folds open you have the feeling of holding a book. I also got a cheap cover (under £5 off Amazon) just to protect the screen on holiday. You can get stick on screen protectors but apparently they cause glare. I don't know much about the new £89 kindle - I believe the battery life isn't quite as good but as I get about 10 books off one charge, even using the light in bed, you could afford to lose a bit! Also there aren't so many covers etc available for the new one but I'm sure they'll catch up soon.

In a nutshell, yes, buy !

I have had the 3g version for a few weeks now and love it. I thought I would miss having a real book but don't at all. I couldn't believe how light it was when I first got it so can't imagine what the new version must be like. So, another kindle convert here recommending you buy one :-P
