Cinnamon
I think Amazon are starting a Kindle book share scheme....I am sure I heard that.
Cinnamon
Have looked into book share...you can add a friend or family members Kindle to you account, and download them to their device, much like you can transfer books to phones and computers, without paying for the book again. Sheilaz
That's useful to know, thanks Cinnamon.
craftyhunnypie
Oh wow - it is awesome! I have bought a few books! It's beautifully clear & easy to use & get your books. Will start & read a bit later. So does it automatically save your page in each book, or must I book mark? How do I do that? Now what to read first? I think the Miss Per?? home for peculiar children is drawing me at the moment. I also got... The chicken, mule & 2 fools, tears behind the veil, a crochet book & some other book about antics of a B&B. Off to study for some free ones in a bit. Fabulous gadget - I'm pleased I got one. Sheilaz
Great! It automatically opens on the page you were on, no need to do anything. It's a joy to read, isn't the ink clear? I can't read a book when I'm tired, my eyes shut, but I can read a Kindle, it must be less eye strain. Let us know how you get on, I'm pleased you've downloaded some good things already. Christian
Glad you got one CHP! You won't regret it! I always book mark my pages. Go to menu, and scroll down to 'add bookmark', the page corner will turn over.... I have finished reading Chickens, mules & ........plus Water for Elephants = fab books. 3/4 way through the Death and Life of Charlie St CLoud that a friend sent me and also have all the Harry Potters too from a friend. It is a wonderful invention!
craftyhunnypie
I sat up last night & read just 4% of chickens, mules..... . I did laugh at the German estate agent! I want a gelly skin as recommended, but which to choose? I like the owls & the books one. I'll stretch to purchasing one of those. Then I need a case too - but I a not paying those prices for a case! Will copy your idea Christian & make one - will look round for some cutesy fabric & scrounge the overlocker off my friend, that she said I could have. I wonder what today's kindle store will bring? I like when you sort of turn off, how a picture comes up. I presume that is all you do to turn off - slide the power switch once? rachel19
Mmmm or just leave it and it will turn itself off - it doesn't use any battery power displaying a page only when changing pages so it doesn't matter about remembering to switch off which I really like.
Sheilaz
That's right, just slide the switch, but for those with WiFi, make sure that connection is off first or it will drain the battery, whereas the screen picture on its own doesn't. Yes, I enjoy those portraits, it's another bonus.
craftyhunnypie
Ahh thanks! I've called my Kindle...Ken! Emma.x
Leicester_H
it doesn't use any battery power displaying a page only when changing pages so it doesn't matter about remembering to switch off which I really like. It DOES use some power in 'standby' (?)mode and does drain the battery faster than actaully switching it off when you're not using it. rachel19
According to amazon, displaying a page of text uses not power at all so it would only drain if you had wireless switched on all the time which definately drains it quickly. If you turn it off it displays a picture so surely no different?
Cinnamon
Indeed, you are not supposed to switch it totally off between reads, but keep it in the standby mode, which uses minimal power,if any, unless you have WIFI connected. Craftyhunnypie,I would seriously get a decent protective cover rather than a skin & a thin case. I dropped mine the other day & the cover proper Amazon Kindle leather cover (pink!) protected it beautifully, plus it gives it a nice book like feel to the Kindle. The retractable light is a nice bonus, although I have never really used mine.
Leicester_H
Indeed, you are not supposed to switch it totally off between reads, ooooooooooooooo - why not? My OH told me off for leaving it in standby !! H
Christian
I didn't know you could switch it off completely, just thought the picture meant it was off! Have looked it up and you need to hold the power switch at the bottom to the right for 7 seconds, then the screen goes blank.
Cinnamon
When you start it up from the proper off 9as Christian has described),it acts as a reboot,so is handy if it freezes or if there is a problem. Other than that it should be kept with the screensaver visible, which doesn't use any battery anyhow, unless WIFI is connected.
Chickendoodle
Had mine about 6 weeks now - absolutely love it. The only downside for me is that I have trouble remembering the names of the books I have read! I have made folders and I transfer my finished book to a completed books folder. However, if anyone was to ask me what I am reading now I would have trouble telling them as you don't see the name of the book in the same way as picking up a paperback. That is the only little downside. It is so easy to read and operate and I have read loads of books that I wouldn't normally pick up as they were free or less than 50p. Most of the classics are free which is brilliant. Check in with Amazon regularly as the free books seem to vary almost by the day
Sheilaz
That's so true! I go to a local, monthly bookgroup, and I finished the novel on Kindle last week, ahead of next week's meeting. This morning I was racking my brain to remember what I read, or even vaguely what it was about, yet I know I really enjoyed it. I still can't recall, I'll have to look on the Kindle, yet I recall the previous paperback book because I remember the cover and therefore the title. Will feel a bit odd at holding the Kindle at bookgroup, butI'll get over it, and it was a great way to read it, (whatever it was), I'm usually trying to finish the last chapter on bookgroup day. Oh, it was The Help, Catherine Stockett.
Cinnamon
I have mine sorted into genres (fiction, travel, bio etc) & also have a 'to read' folder. You can have a book in more than one category,so I just put anything new into its genre and 'to read', then delete it from 'to read' once I have finished it. It works pretty well, but I do miss the colourful covers. .............I have 42 books in my 'to read' are at the moment
Seagazer
I really must do more with my Kindle (unimaginatively called Annie's kindle ) as I have no folders, everything just gets downloaded and left where it is. My lovely hubby tried to surprise me by buying Rob Lowe's autobiography for me and wanted it to be downloaded to Kindle but you can't do that apparently. So I had to buy it myself..... I shall read up and see what else I can do.
Bramble
I don't think this is much help, but I had an email from Amazon today, to say that they've got special offers on for Kindles and case bundles (for Father's Day, I think). Just thought I'd mention it ...
Chickendoodle
Also forgot to say that the "try a sample" option is brilliant. You can read a few pages for free before deciding whether or not to buy the book - you can tell after a page or two if you like the writer's style. I put anything I fancy getting that isn't free on my wish list so that I don't forget about them and I check back every now and then to see if the price has come down (I have 50 or so books unread so no great hurry!) I have the leather cover as I prefer it feeling more like a book

poachedegg
I love mine - so handy to pop in my bag for when waiting outside for children's activities to finish or train journeys.
