eve of the big move..nervous

Recommended Posts

Im sitting amidst the chaos of my half packed house and all I can think about is how are the girls going to handle the move. I decided to leave them in the coop till the last minute and box them when the coop was ready to be loaded onto the truck. Went over to the farm yesterday to lay out the space for the new run and discovered that they will have a large peach tree for shade. Is this asking for trouble? Am I going to have chickens gorging themselves on peaches and getting diarrhea? There really is no where else for me to put the run. I have to avoid the avocado trees as I head they were poisonous to chickens (can anyone confirm this..so many opinions on the web)

I've never had a move which contained so many animals. 4 dogs (another dog and cat came with the house so that in itself is worrying..introductions etc) 2 Guinea Pigs, a very moody rabbit and of course my 6 precious ladies.

I need my head examining...

Best of luck. I feel for you. Moving is the most stressful thing ever :( However I think your chickens will be so lucky to be under a peach tree. I'm sure they won't gorge themselves sick as surely you'll be eating all the peaches (wish I was).

I have, by the way also read that avocado is poisonous to chooks.

P.S. I'm sure all your animals will be happy as happy could be in about a week :D Bet your dog and cat of fate have fallen on their feet. How could people just leave them ?

Good luck with the move, it sounds lovely ... can we see some pictures please, once you've unpacked the boxes and the hens have settled in?

Avocado is poisonous to birds, I don't know how much a chicken would have to consume to suffer ill-effects but it would be dangerous to put their coop under an avocado tree (although I am soo jealous ... they are expensive here, and never ripe when you buy them!).

Thanks guys,

I will post some pictures as soon as I can find the camera.....its in some box I am sure.

About the dog and cat of fate (love that description by the way) I cannot fathom how a person could leave them behind (I took my hamster to the States when we moved here) but people are all different I guess. I couldn't do it.

Anyway, they are in my gang now, hope they fit in.

I will keep the chooks away from the avocados and hopefully they dont eat all my peaches..oh my new farm is called Baskerville Ranch..in honor of my lovely hounds..

It sounds idyllic :clap: All of your animals will be fine, even your newbies :) Actually, ESPECIALLY your newbies!

As for your girls, they'll be fine. They're incredibly resilliant. We moved last Nov. We dismantled the WIR the weekend before so they had 4 days with the cube on the ground (rocks behind the poo trays so nothing could dig in) connected to a wire rabbit pen with the Eglu Classic run connected to that  Looked a mess but was fantastic.

As for the move itself, like you they were last to go and we packed them in cat baskets. At the other end, we quickly reassembled cube/rabbit run/classic run again and they lived happily like that for a couple more days whlst we got the house straight and reassembled the WIR.

They were absolutely fine and love it here!

How far is your truck journey? We only moved a few mile so didn't have to think about food/water for them. If you do, then I've heard lettuce and cucumber are good hydration foods.

Wow a peach tree... lucky lucky girls! Good luck to you too :)

Im only moving an hour north, so I can take them in the car... one species at a time.. Imagine the whole lot shoved in a moving van..like Noahs Ark on wheels.. I'll do the lettuce thing and will divide them into bullies and bullied so no fights on the way.

The big play area should be fenced in by Sunday so they will have to stay in the cube inside a big dog run for a few days. The madams will not be happy about that. Tough luck brats..

thanks

Colette.
