Lavinia
I have recently rescued a Welsh Terrier from the dog home. He had been there for three months because he looked awful but after a good bath, a coat strip and lots of food he is now a good looking woof. However he is obsessed with the eglu, especially when the girls are inside. Can anyone help with a deterrent or some sort of training. He is otherwise well trained. Thank you. theherd123
Its really great that you rescued him. As he is a terrier, terriers will do what terriers will do! Chase, stalk, & hunt almost anything that moves - i should know i have 2 lunatics of my own Poppy is every so slightly manic and as such we have a huge water gun in the garden & each time she misbehaves shes gets a squish, no voice command just a squish. You could try this with your dog when they are stalking the chickens in the eglu and see if it works
Jools
Good luck - you'll need it
AnnieP
Can only back up what Em has said above: I have an Airedale terrier and its just instinct. Water pistols work well.....
chelsea
Terriers ! We've just got rid of the mother-in-law's holidaying JRT whose been here 2 weeks (dog did my head in ) im a big dog lover but that one tests my patience to the max !! Stubborn, strong willed, digs, chases, hides, disobedient. I was going to suggest the water pistol thing too. Good luck, but like the others say, its just the terrier way !! well done to you for rescuing too
Snowy
My westie terrier is brilliant with the chickens now, sees himself as the top chicken (only cos they let him ). But we took our time with introductions, kept him on a lead while out with the chooks etc. He is 9 years old though so quite mature now. AnnieP
I wouldn't trust my Airedale within spitting distance of a free range chook! She knows if she shows any interest when they are in the cage, she'd get a squirt, but its nature, and she can't help her instincts. Its not fair to test them
Moi & Cyril
Hi, we,ve had Pepper & Ginger for 2 weeks now (alas still egg-less ! is this normal?) and also have a westie - She can be calm as a cue whilst on the lead but as soon as she's off she goes mad for the chooks particularly if we're paying them attention. Apart from giving it time, any other ideas ? Do you use the water pistol when the chooks are in the run and she starts "eyeing" them up ? Chicken Licken
2 weeks is not that long. I've had mine since October and Roise has mostly learnt to ignore them (or they peck) - however she gave Clara a good run for her money and was almost in the naughty dog corner (thankfully as she is 11 she is getting a little slow) - It just takes time. As for the laying I think mine were almost a month before th ey laid - now they do it every day!!
AnnieP
You bet! My Airedale "Terror" now skirts away from the run rather than pass by it. Here's a gratuitous piccie... Jools
This is my obsessed Jack Russell - Alfred - on Chicken Watch. I promise the post rammer is not there as a deterrent!!! http://club.omlet.co.uk/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=10152
Snowy
Aaaaahhhh! Alfie and Molly are such cuties! I must admit I had a feeling that our westie would be OK with the chooks eventually. Because normally he chases the pigeons as they fly over, but when one large wood pigeon (nicknamed 'the chicken' by neighbours) stood on the lawn eyeballing him, he pretended he hadn't seen it and just walked straight past it! When I pointed it out to him, he still pretended not to see it until it took off - then he chased it! Complete wuss and coward my dog. jennifer
Our 18 month Border terrier is great with the girls but only after some training. He's fine when their out of the run but when their inside the eglo he just sits at the rear of it and sniffs and listens to whats going on inside. It all share and share alike at our place! Moi & Cyril
Sorry for the late reply , we're not great with this chatroom lark...but we have success... We let the dog free and she chased both chocks but failed to make contact and then got a severe telling off and locked in the kitchen... we then tried it again next day.... same result.. we then tried it again next day and .......... "Sorted!... " she just eyeballs the chocks until we raise our voice and then backs off and leaves them alone, and goes on her merry way. Fell a bit sorry for her as it was her garden alone but hey ho, she'll get used to it. Now then if only Ginger and Pepper would lay me an egg or two ! We've had them for nearly 3 weeks now but I don't know there actual age.
