foreveryoung
Hello, Cant believe its happened again, 3am this morning hubby woke me up telling me there was a commotion down the run, so bleary eyed and all pj'd up I hobble down there..... to find feathers everywhere and no fox, I think my Lab darting down there may have scared the lil off after checking the girls I noticed one of my ex batts was bleeding. On closer inspection the fox has had her round the throat and ripped her skin around her neck. I secure the run and took Molly in, called the out of hours vet who wants £60 just to see her... I was like, I dont want a consultation, I think it would be best just to put her down. still couldnt waver the consultation fee she then said could you do it??? I was like I dont know how not want to try it as if I did it wrong she could end up in more pain. I didnt think she wouldnt make the trip to the vet so we put her in the dog create with straw, sugar water and food (just in case) and thought we will see what happens (90% of these cases the bird normally dies from shock) rightly or wrongly its the choice i chose to make! To my surprise she was plodding around her cage this morning and I have taken her to the vet and they are going to sedate and stitch her up and provide the relevant aftercare treatment!!!! fingers crossed peeps xxxx emma x Edited July 14, 2011 by Guest
beach chick
oh goodness, what a lovely night you had! hope she pulls through ok. foxes are rampant at the moment, our Lab is out everynight charging about in the long grass. have just spotted a place where they come through so am going to put something heavy over it... I know it wont stop the blighters but at least it will make their lives more difficult. I wish they'd bring back fox-hunting... I know I know, they have a right to live, beautiful creatures, etc etc but when I think of how many of our chooks and rabbits they've had, despite upping the security every time, I just think vermin
migsy
Nasty - hope she pulls through. I keep having nightmares about foxes ever since one of mine was fatally wounded by one. The latest one was 2 nights ago. In it I looked out of the window and the whole of my garden was dug up and in amongst the soil I saw chickens' bodies. Then some of the chickens began to move and they were badly injured. Horrid! I see them as a pest and not cute wildlife. I don't agree with fox hunting though as it seems a cruel way to end a life. Shooting them seems better.
foreveryoung
Just an update, Molly has been sewn up but the wound also involve her crop... they said shes coming round well and laid a rather large egg lol (I said they could keep that lol) so tomorrow I will drop off my minded kiddies and collect my lovely lady (all being well) xx
fluffy chick
How did the fox get them at night How horrible for you, I'm so pleased she pulled through. Foxes are not evil and what they are doing is natural, we keeping chickens like we do is unnatural. Not that that is much consolation when you've just lost your flock. migsy
I agree, Fluffy Chick, that what they do is natural just as it is natural for humans to eat meat or for a cat to kill a bird. However, when they threaten the life of your pets is becomes a bit of us against them and survival of the fittest.
Sammiboo
Oh no how truely awful!! hope she pulls through. Birds are a lot tougher than you think. I have looked after many birds that you would think had no hope and they make a full recovery. Keep us updated!! I am really paranoid about foxes. Still havent seen them around, but i still keep the girls locked in cube at night not in the run just incase. Have woke up a few times when i thought i heard something and had to check on them
foreveryoung
It is a natural thing, its just unfortunate that one of my girls got, got..... about 18 months ago we had heavy snow which resulted in my original run becoming damaged due to the weight of the snow, this resulted in my ducks getting foxed and it was horrible... we built a new and improved run, with galvanised mesh (from a building site), 4b4 and 2b4 concrete and sabs... so fairly secure. so being that the run was secure I pulled the cube and eagle doors to rather then shut... however a slat was removed and replaced (cant remember why now and I dont think it was screwed back properly and the fox cub/pup found it all's fixed, double checked and secure now!! xx
fluffy chick
sounds like really bad luck. I agree, Fluffy Chick, that what they do is natural just as it is natural for humans to eat meat or for a cat to kill a bird. However, when they threaten the life of your pets is becomes a bit of us against them and survival of the fittest. absolutely
