I've just bought the help pack thingy off the omlet site, with lots of various tonics etc, and we got DE and Verm-x but I don't really understand what they for.

 

Am I right in thinking the Verm-X kils worms properly, where as the DE is more of preventive to help them getting worms and ticks etc.

 

Reading the bottle for the DE it says for chickens "2% by weight of grain or pellets" am I right in thinking that means, if i put in 100 grams of pellets I have to put 2 grams of DE in? and would this be 4 grams for 2 chickens?

 

Also can you use DE in conjuction with Verm-X?

you could use them both as they're both 'herbal' however, flubenvet is the only licenced poultry wormer in the UK with lab results to back up its claims. I would use DE in the coop and run to keep it a bit fresh and rub it on the chooks now and again, and throw out the verm-x but that's just me!

I agree entirely. DE for dust baths, flubenvet for worming. Verm x for the bin

I'd also use the DE in the coop puff it in the cracks and also in the nestbox to keep mites at bay

 

DE works by s"Ooops, word censored!"ing away the protective layer of parasites (internal or external) and drying them out so they die as it has sharp edges but personally I wouldnt feed anything to my chooks that was abrasive!

 

If you do choose to use the DE in food then you dont change the dose for more chooks, its the feed you are dosing dont forget so two chickens will simply eat the same food twice as quickly as one will so dose each batch of feed at 2%

 

Verm-x is a herbal worm preventative, some people swear by it, i'd probably use it up but not rely on it to get rid of worms preferring to use the only licence poultry wormer which is Flubenvet

Agree too. I've never used Verm x as can't see the point when I know Flubenvet will do the job properly. We seem to go through a lot of Diatom though as my OH sprinkles it around the Cube and Eglu so much that you would think it had just snowed in there when he's done

Same here, I load the dustbath with Diatom as well.

Me too - DE in the dust bath.

 

I am a monthly vermex user though, as I can't quite bring myself to use a medication & still eat the eggs (personal choice). What I will do though is get the poo tested twice a year to see if all ok worm wise & then will use flubenvet if there are worms.
