Today is day one of worming (Marriages pellets with Flubenvet). Oh, my poor poor chickens They are not happy They are doing their best to make me feel real bad. I can't stand that beak-against-mesh noise - backwards and forwards, backwards and forwards "Please feed us, please let us out, please please please" No treats, no FR - oh it's so hard - can't wait to get it over with.

Worming due here too. I really must get on with it, and not keep putting it off. The anticipation of mixing up the feed is always worse than the reality and at least afterwards I know I am keeping my girls healthy.

Why not get the pre-mixed pellets? I find them marvellous.

 

The Marriages site is terrible but I just phone them up and order directly; they are helpful and it arrives two days later. I buy the 10kg bag.

I've bought the powder, didn't know about the pellets. I'll have to get them when the powder runs out, as the mixing sounds a bit of a pain. Also, no matter how careful I am I'll be worried I didn't do it well enough The things we do for chooks

I'll consider it for the future, but at the moment I have a huge amount of the powder to use so it would be silly not to use it. To be honest, I'm just being lazy, it only takes 5 mins to mix up! Might go and do it now before I go off the idea again

Thank you so much for highlighting the pre-mixed pellets. Just called my local supplier to order a bag. I knew I ought to think about worming my girls and have been reading all about mixing flubenvet but found it really worrying knowing if the girls got their quota but this will be fabulous. Thank you again for mentioning it. Thought it would be very expensive too but was very surprised.

 

I also found that dried mealworms can be bought for a fraction of the price that the shops sell them at on eBay. Bought a 2kg bag for £22.95 whereas I bought an 800g tub for £19.99. How's about that for a bargain then.

I did give in yesterday and let them out for about half an hour before bed time when I could see that they had eaten all the pellets. I even gave them some melon and a nice big cabbage leaf - they were ravenous

 

Anyway, day two and they're punishing me now - no eggs I told they they can't come out coz they haven't eaten all the pellets yet, but maybe later if they're good. I can hear poor Bessie "hooting" now (she has a voice like an old fashioned bicycle horn/hooter thing ).

Just so long as you keep the feeder topped up during the week, they will eat as much as they need. I run it down towards the end of the week so that the feeder is empty or 'as near as'.

So am I right in thinking you give them the pellets for just seven days and then that's it....what are you supposed to do with the remainder of the 10kg bag?! That seems to be the smallest bag they do. I'm guessing the date will expire long before my three chickens munch through it. Not sure how effective the alternative is though...as my friend said I can imagine the flubenvet powder just falls to the bottom?

I'd seal the bag well and use it again in 3 months. The powder is more cost effective and has a much longer use by date. It actually sticks to pellets really well as it a fine powder. When I mixed it recently it coated the pellets and spoon that I mixed it with extremely well. It has been manufactured to mix with food and so they took the ability to coat pellets into account

I was told by the lady at Marriages to give it for 7 days and possibly worm them again in 3 months to use up the pellets before the 'use by' date. However I now share the bag with a friend, we are buying it time about and it means that it is fresh. It is so easy to use

We're on day 3 now and I've just ealised the pellets are past their use-by date Hopefully they will still be effective and it won't do them any harm I think I'll finish the full 7 days then chuck the rest.

 

Is there anyone living near to me who wants to go halves on Flubenvet pellets next time:?: Having only two girls, I don't use much of it and if the use-by dates are so short, it's a bit of a waste of money

That is a shame and sadly a draw back of using the pellet (until hopefully they do a smaller bag). Unfortunately you are not allowed legally to offer part of your bag (or tub of Flubenvet) to someone else Click. The mix your own stuff is much more cost effective for 2 chickens and the use by date is much longer that with food which deteriorates.

I buy the 10kg bag directly from Marriages and it lasts for two quarterly doses before it goes out of date. If it's just expired then I'd still use it.

Well I'm sure we aren't the only ones who have done that Julia. I just automatically think 20kg when it comes to buying food and I didn't even realise they did a smaller bag till I read this thread. I do know a couple of people locally who keep hens too, but not sure if they use the pre medicated pellets or not.

 

I have 7 hens at the moment, so not even sure how much I will use in a week. Mind you we may be buying a few more at the weekend, but not sure if it's okay to worm young girls or not

I'm sure you're right we can't be the only one's. I only have 6 girls at the moment and I have no idea what they eat each day as I just keep the grubs topped up, I suppose I top them up ( I have two) every three or four days. Mind you, the 20kg bag I've bought was only £10.75 so it's not as if I've broken the bank. Mind you, next time I might try mixing the flubenvet powder with their own pellets as, after reading much more about it, it really doesn't sound that complicated and by all accounts is more economical.

 

Good luck with your new girls not sure how early you can worm them but I'm sure someone out there does.

I have just done my 2 chickens with the flubenvet 1% powder. I was worried about the hassle of mixing it as you have to start off with a small cup then get bigger... actually it was really easy to mix up slowly and took about 5 minutes. I did 2KG's of food to one scoop (as per instructions)

 

I was amazed how much it actually stuck to the pellets.... I thought I was going to have to use oil or something but it stuck fine.

 

Those 2KG of pellets lasted them the whole 7 days with just a few s"Ooops, word censored!"es in the bottom of the grub feeders. I let them out for about 30 minutes in the evening.

 

I would buy the marriages but would like to buy in a 2KG bag - 5KG max but it appears they dont do it. The powder is going to last me ages!

 

Dont be put off by the mixing its very easy, you just need 2 or 3 plastic containers to mix in and out off.
