Groovychook
I seem to be getting on top of the lice problem with my girls, but was thinking of bathing them to get rid of any dead skin/ dandruffy bits. I've read on the forum that you can bathe them in a poultry shield dilution but just wondered if I should use the same rate that I did for washing out the cube (1 part poultry shield with 9 parts water) or whether I need to water it down further? Egluntyne
Poultry Shield is not for use directly on the hen.... it is for cleaning the housing.
Groovychook
Poultry Shield is not for use directly on the hen.... it is for cleaning the housing. I'd read this on the forum and just presumed that it was safe to use. The good news is that I inspected my friend's flock yesterday and we can't see any signs of live mites *wooo hoo* We washed (in Poultry Shield dilution) a few bottoms and removed all the dead mite eggs and layers of dead skin that were matted in the botty fluff. They're all clean now and look happier. I couldn't find anything about a dilution rate though, so just thought I'd ask. Thanks for clearing that up though. The Dogmother
Egluntyne is right it's not for use on hens - we just used it in desperation when my friend's hens had a really bad infestation and had NFM eggs and debris cemented onto their bottoms. We diluted it at roughly 10:1 As I said, I can't recommend it but the hens didn't come to any harm.
Groovychook
Thanks both of you. I'll just bathe them in the normal way then!
Redwing
A little gentle dog flea shampoo is ok to use (I used Bob Martins which you can normally get in the supermarket) always add the shampoo to the water and not directly on the bird though
UKMARCH
I remember reading about being able to use it on hens and I saw it in the "Avoid the Vet" book in the section about not using toxic chemicals and promoting using natural products. It said that there was a double use but didn't give the strength to use and says about using a dog shampoo for depluming mite. I wouldn't use any with SLSs in but would use an organic one that I would be happy using on my children.
