joybelle
I`ve just got some more flubenvet the 1% but am wondering if it will mix ok with layers mash which is quite powdery. I`ve got some new hens and they wont eat pellets. Joy
KimmyCustard
I mix my mash with water and the Flub, into a sort of thick porridge, the girls love it, maybe give that a go?
kissinuk
I stick to a tip that was posted on here years ago and makes sure the chooks are getting the right dose each day. Basically you slit open a grape put a tiny amount of flubenvet on it and feed it to them direct. No worrying about them having to finish a whole bowl of food first. Egluntyne
The manufacturers advice is that the Flubenvet should be fed throughout the day mixed in with the food, and not in one dose as with the grape method.
Space Chick
I wouldn't use the grape method. I mix a bit of cod liver oil to the pellets which helps the flubenvet to "stick", I then add these treated pellets to untreated pellets to ensure that they have the correct dose. Also, remember to minimise free ranging and treats whilst worming.
chickencam
I just shake mine up in a sack that I keep for the purpose and give it a good shake each time I want to take some out.
ashjc
I dont use mash so dont know its consistency but I can tell you that I recently used the 1% and mixed it with layer pellets... I was surprised at how well it stuck to the pellets without any lubricant so to speak. I mixed it as per the instructions, I weighed out 2KG of pellets then put some in a cup with the measure of wormer, then mixed the cup with a bigger portion of layers, then again, and again until the whole 2KG was mixed. It stuck to it really well. I wouldnt use the grape method, I was advised that the dose needs to be administered slowly throughout the day rather than in a quick swift dose on a grape. I would imagine it would mix the same with the mash as it would the pellets and if it doesnt stick perhaps a bit of cod liver oil?

Also, remember to minimise free ranging and treats whilst worming. I used the grape method the first time when I just had 4 girls but having read more on the forum I changed to the Space Chick's method and use this each time now, it seems much easier. I have just started doing my girls again today, the first time for the ex batts Chrissie
BocBoc
We sacked off the Flubenvet - got some worming liquid from our avian specialist vet. A couple of mls in a litre of water saw all six of our girls wormed in one day for a year. Egg withdrawal for three weeks. Sorted

BocBoc
I know! But it wasn't that much of a hardship as egg production was very low anyway
The Dogmother
Hmmm, not heard of that one and am not too sure how it could be effective for a year
kissinuk
The manufacturers advice is that the Flubenvet should be fed throughout the day mixed in with the food, and not in one dose as with the grape method. I guess that proves that advice on here sometimes needs to be taken with a pinch of salt then, feeding on grapes was recommended by a lot of people on here in the past! Not having a go, I guess that is to be expected when a lot of people on here are also relatively new to hen keeping. Okay then, I have now mixed mine with food, however I seem to have the 2.5% stuff so need to be extra careful. Works out at 120g per 100kg of food, so that's about a small teaspoon (5g) to 4kg of food, which as it happens is 2 grubs filled. Sorted, now will leave it there for the week and hope they eat it!... The Dogmother
Quite some time ago, the rep from Janssen (makers of Flubenvet) was on the stand at The National and he actually said that it was OK to dose Flubenvet in porridge or on grapes, so folk thought that it was OK to do. On checking with Janssen though, they corrected this and apologised; it MUST be dosed throughout the day, in the feed. Hence initial recommendations on here being to dose in one-off shots, then being corrected.
kissinuk
That explains it then, if you can't trust the manufacturer to get it right, who can you trust? Hope I never done my old girls any harm with grapes...
The Dogmother
It was just an isolated incident with one rep who had very little idea about chickens at all - Laurmurf and I grilled him and he was hopeless Janssen were quick to put it right and had a word with the rep. You'll not do them any actual harm bu dosing like that, it just won't be as effective a wormer as it would if you weer dosing properly
