Help please. Really concerned about my chicken

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Ive not been on here for quite a while but i really need advice from you about 1 of my girls...

Last night due to the terrible weather and it being cold i put the chickens away about an hour early and after a very late night with my 13month old we over slept so they didnt get let out until about 8.30am.

One of them had been quite pecked by the others :(

the one that has been pecked is really out of character today, i have sprayed her and cleaned her up and also put anti peck on her. I caught 2 of the other 3 pecking at her so i put her seperate in the cage as they are FR but she just stood not moving for about 30minutes. ive since put her in a cardboard box in the conservatory and she hasnt touched her water or food. or pooped. I startedto get very worried about her as she wasnt moving other than slow blinking and breathing.. She has just gotten up which has relieved me so what!

But i just don't know what to do for her, she is clearly very scared after what happened... anny ideas or suggestions would be very greatly appreciated.

You've done well so far

If her injuries are very bad get her to a vet

If they arent then keep her in the cardboard box out of any drafts - make sure there are some holes in the box

Keep here there till at least this evening, in the dark box she should go in to roost mode and keeping her in the dark and quiet will help her get over the shock, dont keep opening the box, just take a peek through the holes every now and again to check she is ok

Only when she seems happier and more alert worry about food and water. Some soaked corn will tempt her and chooks can be encouraged to drink if you add a tiny drop of Ribena to the water.

Once she is eating and drinking you will need to decide what to do next, dont let her back with the others while the wounds are fresh and even then without covering the wounds in purple spray. reintroducing her may be hard

Thank you, the box isnt closed so should i put the lid down with holes close the windows and leave her for a while? I have been checking an stroking her regular. she has waser, food, banana, mushroom peelings (their favourites) and not eating.

her injuries didnt seem too bad bald but not too much skin damage - a slight amount which was bleeding a little but her whole back area is now purple.

I think it is the shock as she just seems scared. I hate seeing her like this and its really upset me :( i feel so guilty for getting up late!!

{{{{{hugs}}}}} So sorry to hear your news. :( There must have been more going on than you could diagnose. At least her last hours were calm and quiet and stress free. You did everything you could for her. Here's hoping she is scratching happily by the rainbow bridge with the friends who have gone before her

So sorry to hear the news but as someone has already said you made her last hours quiet and comfy. Your little boy will learn a lot from this experience and hard though it is, losing a pet is a very valuable preparation for losing human loved ones and just realising that there is a cycle of life etc. There are lots of lovely books to help young children - ones we used when i was a teacher include 'Badger's Parting Gift', and 'Goodbye Mog' (about a cat). The latter one still brings tears to my eyes!

Thanks forall you help yesterday.

Sadly Whisky passed away around 10.30pm last night

I am so, so sorry :( :(

The very same thing happened to me yesterday (I posted in the Chicken Clinic section the night before but she didn't last the night). One of mine was really hen pecked by the whole group and went into a kind of depression/trance; she was only 13wks old. When I spoke to the chicken lady at the farm, she said it was probably the stress/shock and sometimes animals react by simply "giving up". Her experience is far greater than mine, so I bow to her greater wisdom.

I know how upsetting it can be ((consoling hug))

I'm sorry to read this sad news. :(

Hens can be horrid and it could be that your little chicken was pecked by the others because they realised she was not well in the first place. Her death might not have been due to the pecking at all but because she was below parr anyway so don't beat yourself up about getting up late(ish).
