Quick Question about glugs/grubs!

Recommended Posts

Sorry, this is probably a daft question, but.... with 3 chickens do you need to have 2 Grubs and 2 Glugs or will they take it in turns to eat/drink from one? I'm also presuming that for 3 you'd need to have the extra space a 1m run extension would give rather than just the standard run.

Thanks!

My 2 chickens share a grub and a glug and I have bought a 1m extension to the run. I did think abou getting 3 chickens but decided against it because of the secure space I can give them when I am out at work. However, they are now out of their run for hours at a time in the evenings, weekends and when I work from home so I guess that a 3m run would be OK for 3 chickens. Their time out will reduce in the winter though.

I work part-time and my OH is in and out with his job, so whenever we're at home they're either out fully free-ranging in the garden, or out in the netted off area we've created for them, the only occasion they spend any length of time confined to the run is if for some reason neither of us will be home at any point during a day.

We have two at the moment and I know the general advice is not to try to introduce one new hen to two, but Sage has not been very well recently, she's much improved now and it looks like she should be alright but will probably never lay again. She'll have a home with us as a loved pet for as long as she lives, but we're missing the extra eggs, so that's why we're contemplating the difficult introduction of a third hen. I know it would be a little easier introducing two but I really don't think we can give 4 hens the space they'd need, particularly during the introduction period when we're going to have to work out some temporary accommodation and run space to take it slowly.

I also have 3 chooks + (purple eglu) + 1m extension, I have 2 glugs & 2 grubs..... however they only seem to be eating out of the purple one! I think you'll be fine with 1 set, I only put the 2nd one in as we were given them free from Omlet years ago and they were just lying in the house doing nothing!

One tip is that I'd definitely recommend making a door in the middle of the run, has worked out great for me, so much easier to clean out now.

You can just see the 2nd door in the middle panel on the right of the pic.

Although I do have spare grubs and glugs at the moment we have 5 girls with just one grub and glub between them and they are fine. They all get along well so there is never any problem about any of them being left out. Before we split the run into 3 we did have more feeding stations in the run and we will most likely move them all around at the weekend when we do a big clean out, weather permitting.

How did you make and fit the middle door panel? I am just putting the extension on next weekend which means I won't be able to reach right to the end of the run with a rake for cleaning.

I ordered a spare door & pin from Omlet when I ordered the extension, it cost £9.80 (note you have to ring them, don't think they're on the site).

I then cut the hole out of the middle panel being careful to leave a row overlapping at the top where the run starts to curve. I also didn't cut all the wire straight down, I left a couple of bits sticking out so they could be bent round to hold the door pin (if that makes sense?), two on the right and one on the left for when it's opened. I then painted all the exposed metal with green plasticote paint to protect it.

I can take a photo of the wire that I cut out if you want to see the shape. I was a bit concerned that the run would lose some strength, but because the run skirt is part of the run itself it's perfectly strong enough to have the door. Have to admit I did check it a million times before I started cutting, just in case I went wrong!

I can now reach the whole run with a rake which makes cleaning much easier!
