Rugby World Cup 2011

Recommended Posts

Hope it's ok to start a thread on this. I completely love this tournament and obsessively watch as much as I can. NZ v Tonga at 9.30am tomorrow. I've got apps & posters. Only trouble is that because of time difference, I can't have a beer while I'm watching - or should I have a beer in support of the spirit of the game? Maybe not, coffee it is.

I'm finding it pretty much impossible to ignore!! So much excitement & they're all warming up for the opening ceremony in Auckland now, saturation coverage on tv at the moment.

I'll be watching it with Kiwi friends tonight.....go the All Blacks, & I'm lucky enough to have 3 matches at our local stadium, 10 mins walk away, so will be going to watch Ireland play Russia there.

Got my Kiwi friend coming this afternoon so I hope they win this morning :D I still remember the time we went to their house for lunch and to watch NZ beat France. Except they didn't. My friends are going back to NZ on Monday and have tickets to at least one match there. Anyway, depending on what happens at the end of the tournament you must let us know the headlines Cate; after one World Cup defeat apparently the paper was black edged and with a one word headline, not suitable for printing here. Beginning with B and ending with S

Go England 8) And Wales 8)

Love Rugby, remember when England won, we were all in the pub having breakfast with a pint!! Just hope that the guys do themselves proud and really believe that they can win. Will be cheering them on tomorrow & hope that Johnny gets the number 10 shirt for the match. :D

I remember that day well we had a viewing for a house (which is now home) but the lady had forgotten and OH, DS and I sat outside in the car waiting for her to come back and listened to the end of the match on the radio. A good day

Got up early to watch Tonga vs Canada, bit of a panic on because I thought it was on ITV1 and there was some morning show on. By the way, the morning show was very patronizing, made me cross in the five minutes I watched it, although that might be because I couldn't find the rugger. Found it on ITV4, Phew!

Anyway, Canada are playing great and there are some mighty beards being sported by them. I didn't watch the previous match which I think started at 3.30am. OH got up at 4am to go to work but didn't wake me!

I watched some of the Scotland v Georgia match this morning, Scotland did just enough. I have met 'big Jim' Hamilton a couple of times minus his beard, he is the biggest person I have ever met. He came into our very high ceilinged office and still managed to look huge. I am not the sort of woman that goes weak at the knees easily but there was so much of him, he is much more handsome in the flesh. All of the ladies who met him went weak

The matches at the weekend were good, I missed Japan but OH said that they were great. We had very weird sleep patterns over the weekend what with the rugby and the US Open tennis what a final that was 8)

There's been some brilliant matches, & great scores, as well as some big suprises so far in the RWC...I didn't expect to enjoy it, but I'm finding myself glued to some of the matches.

Wales beat Samoa this afternoon

The Ireland v Australia match was incredible, I would never have predicted Ireland to beat one of the great rugby teams...but I'm over the moon that they did.

Now for England v Georgia this evening. I've got the ironing basket lined up and the tv booked to watch the match...if the tension is as great as it was yesterday evening (Ireland/ Oz) I'll probably not make much headway on the ironing though...but the intentions are good.

Anyway, depending on what happens at the end of the tournament you must let us know the headlines Cate; after one World Cup defeat apparently the paper was black edged and with a one word headline, not suitable for printing here.

You're right Daphne....sport is huge here and the Kiwis seem to live & breathe it.....and they're dreadful losers. They expect to win this year, and to be fair the All Blacks are in great form, and it is on home territory so expectations have to be high. But if they lose there will pretty much a state of national mourning I'm sure

I am really enjoying the Rugby - and only a small part of that is due to the men in tight shorts thing...

BUT.

Can someone please explain to me the whole losing bonus points thing??? I don't understand how you can earn points by losing a match...??

OH and I were in Australia for the RWC in 2003, and saw England's group stage matches in Perth and Melbourne, which was fantastic. Even better, by pure chance we were staying in the hotel next to the team hotel in Perth, and had some close encounters with some seriously impressive hunks

YS was there on a gap year at the time, and managed to get a ticket for the final lucky boy!

It's to keep the games alive and so that teams keep attacking. It you lose by 7 points or less or by getting a certain amount of tries you get bonus points. I think that's right, I can't always follow the rules in rugby.

That makes sense! Thank you!

It's been such an exciting tournament so far I can't wait for four years time when we host it. BUT, one of my boys won O2 WAKE UP ENGLAND draw and we've got 8 breakfast pies, 8 pints, a flag & England postcards. Guess what I'm doing Saturday morning!

I think I'll need b'fast beer. Tense game we must win. I'd like to wish good luck to any Scottish fans but I'm not that nice.

It's going to be a good match I'm sure, but I've got my fingers firmly crossed for England. It's all incredibly sociable around here, everyone's having a great time, lots of English fans in town over the past week, stopping off en route to Auckland for tomorrow's match 8). We're off to watch the match with friends at their home tomorrow, lots of food, drink & cheering I'm sure.

My daughter & I went to watch the Ireland v Russia match last weekend since it was at the stadium at the bottom of our road. The atmosphere was amazing .....first rugby match I'd ever actually attended, & it was such an experience.
