I've been umming and ahhing about getting ex-bats ever since I first started with poultry.

When I first decided to get chickens I had planned to get a recycled house and some ex-bats but then felt it would be too much too soon so got hybrids instead.

Well many experiences later and an ever expanding flock I thought it was finally time to get some so I have put my name down.

Hooray, well done you!!! You won't regret it, ex-batts are the BEST 8)

I picked up my second batch of three just a couple of weeks ago, they are now out free ranging in the garden, picking up all kinds of bad habits from last year's intake. There has been some squabbling but I'm hoping that they've more or less sorted out their pecking order (they spent the first ten days completely separate, but within sight of each other.

Good luck with them, do you know when you will get them?

Good for you. :D I always have a few ex batts in my flock. They are well worth the time and effort.

:lol: I've only ever had (and still have) one chook who is not an ex-batt and she takes more time, effort and maintenance than the rest of the ex-batts put together, she's such a little madam!!!

Annoyingly there is a rehoming happening as we speak near me but I know there is another one in a months time. :)

I'm just trying to work out the logistics of moving my other hens into different housing so I can free up a nice house and run for them.

It is time I said bye bye to a couple of the boys - chicken life is so unfair. :( The boys have had a brilliant life (if i do say so myself) and will not go to waste. And the plus side it will make space for some ladies that deserve a fair crack at the good life.

I work full time, as does my hubby, and we keep ex batts in our flock.

They take a little more TLC for a couple of weeks, but not much more to be honest.

Our most recent ex batts have been with us for just over 3 weeks, they are already integrated with the rest of the girls, are starting to re-feather and have become cheeky, happy chooks :D

Ex batts are lovely go for it.

The 'A team' are my first ex batts (sadly lost one this morning) but I plan to always have a few ex batts.

Chrissie

Sorry you lost one Chrissie - I'm sure she had a splendid retirement but it is still upsetting when they go. :(

Thank you all for your encouragement - the brilliant news is that I am getting 4 on Saturday.:clap::dance:

Off to rearrange the chicken houses and get everything disinfected for them.

Hi ... Dont often post but was checking updates on "chicken of fate" !!! I'm hooked. Saw your thread and had to let you know how chuffed I am that some more ex-bats are going to have a lovely life with you :D I dipped my toe into the wacky world of chickens May 2007 and my life has never been the same .. in a good way  I started with 3 ex-bats but sadly Edna passed away in June. Then I got 2 more in July, the intros were a bit hairy a times but now they are one happy little flock. I would love more but only have an (green eglu) with extended run. I'm hoping to get (cube green) next year if funds allow so I can have more. Ex-bats are just the best, its so great to see them re-feather and become stronger cheeky chooks.

Good luck ... you wont regret it. Mine make me smile every day

Thank you Elaine that was a lovely post. Mine have made me smile so much today. I'm very proud of them. Two eggs already bless.

Oh my goodness, it's so amazing to see their first steps into the outside world. Hopefully they will feather up before it gets too cold. They are such fab, friendly ladies. You will love them. If only I had more room......................Alli xx

I guess we can only do what we can. My only regrets are that I didn't do it sooner and I couldn't house any more at the moment.

I still need to make sure my other posh girls are not feeling left out though. :D

It always brings a lump to my throat when I see what an awful state they are in. It's so sad when I think how spoilt some animals are and how others barely survive the life they are forced to lead :(

Your chickens are so lucky to have been given a second chance at a decent life. I would love to see pics in a few weeks when they've feathered up and are acting like spoilt brats
