chestnutmare
It's not sad at all. We could be thinking of worse things couldn't we?! I have to say, I never thought I'd be this interested in chickens. But there are so many different types to admire.

Chortle Chook
OH scoleded me just the other day for 'having a head full of chickens' - made me laugh. As my hair gets more and more frizzly I think he could have a point Chestnutmare - go for it. Regular sized Silkies do not seem to be all that common. I'm As for the colours could they be chocolate and perhaps cuckoo? Neither colours are standardised but some people are trying to breed them and are selling on very nice birds that just happen not to be quite the right colours. If you look on the Silkie club Website you might see these colours.
shona
I paid £20 each for my 2 white Silkies and £30 for my partridge one, if this helps. I also joined the Silkie Club of Great Britain, fantastic pictures on their website and lots of information.
squiffs
I paid £30 a pullet for my Gold Bearded Silkies The lady also breeds white, red marked white, red, red partridge, gold partridge, brown partridge, some bearded some unbearded £15-£20 each. Chortle Chook
As with all things, prices seem to be going up (partly because of increased feed costs). I paid £25 for my first Silkie (little gold Dolly) and £35 for my latest (little Dinky who was supposedly chocolate but became black after her first moult )
chestnutmare
Thanks CC. I looked at the website - there's a club?! Uh oh... I think the silkies I saw were chocolate coloured. I remember them as being brown. If my OH was with me with his phone I'd have got him to take pics to show but I was on my own. Thanks for the info shona and squiffs. I'm loving this thread. I can't just buy a couple at the pet shop if the fancy takes me (which is a shame as I'm always browsing). I have a small WIR and I wouldn't be happy putting any more in there. So that would mean purchasing another Eglu and I think taking another shed down and buying another WIR. I may have been thinking about this lately... because I was thinking I could buy another Eglu to go in the currently WIR and I have my run and extension that I was using for my . Does anyone follow me?

What happens at the Reading show? I know, I have to come and see you soon! Double booked myself last time . We'll arrange something when you're back from sunny Tenerife. Chortle Chook
Chestnutmare, you can't miss the Reading show! So many chooks you'll not know what to do . I was spell bound this year and OH could scarcely get me out of there BUT . . . there won't necessarily be any Silkies for sale (though there will be lots on show). Also the POL hens on sale tend to be sold with a cockerel If you go for those choccy chooks then be warned - they may go black - but they are still really adorable. Here's one to get you in the mood

chestnutmare
Welcome to the forum not enough chickens. I went back to the pet shop today. The silkies there are definitely brown in colour. One is a cockerel the other a hen. They are lovely but I'm sticking to my plan of getting bantams next. I wouldn't mind a 'little' silkie though. Chortle Chook
So LolaLayla are you getting your silkies? I know what everyone means by a sudden need to have one of each colour. I've put my name down for a blue Silkie for next year - that's if the breeder remembers (And I have to confess that I do rather like my girly pink glug and grub. My girls get everything in pink including food shovel and tub trug while I get pinny and gloves all in pink )
