LolaLayla
So LolaLayla are you getting your silkies? Well I got a phone number but they only have one male and one female. They will be breeding them next year but they are large bantams not large fowl I was told the colour was partridge. Think the National Show may still be my best bet. Chortle Chook
Partidge is a very pretty colour. Sizewise sounds like an 'in-betweeny' Here's a partridge in-betweeny trying to look as tall as possible to give you an idea. However if you are uncertain I'd suggest you stick to your guns and take a look during the National to see what colours and size you really would like. And here she is again trying to hide in the bushes.
LolaLayla
She is absolutely gorgeous. What a lovely colour I will see what there is at the show but at least I know I should be able get one like yours in the spring. I am only worried about the size as I hope the hens will eventually be able to live together.
Redwing
I snapped a pic of my large fowl Silkie cockerel with his two bantam wives so you can see the size difference

LolaLayla
Thanks Redwing I suppose the ones I know will be available in the spring will be in-between those sizes. There is quite a difference in size I just don't want any bullying if it can be avoided.
Chortle Chook
What a lovely big boy, Redwing and a stunning colour. I admit that in all my Silkie huntings I've never seen a real standard. But - LolaLayla don't forget that a cockerel would most probably be bigger than a hen anyway. Hello not enough chickens, don't think I'd fancy Silkie for supper but apparently it is an aphrodisiac along with rhino horn and shark's tooth etc.
LolaLayla
Thank you CC I have not seen a cockerel in real life either so hadn't really thought about their size in comparison to the girls.

Chortle Chook
Oh squiffs you are really cruel. You have made me realise how lovely it looks when there are lots of Silkies all together. I really like those little dark ones. They look more partridge than my partridge. Is that Hamble Valley ? I sopke to the lady there as I was hopeful about getting a POL blue Silkie and a POL Silver Laced Poland, but she seemed a bit fierce. I'd really like to go and see without having to pre-book and pre-pay for girls. Perhaps next summer

Perhaps next summer No, her name's Alison Ingram, she lives in a village in West Sussex, she breeds German Shepherds, Welsummers and Silkies She's an artist and a hobbyist breeder really - but she's getting a nice gold cockerel from show lineage next year and is hopefully going to play around with white, blue and splash next year! Another thing re. Hamble Valley - I'm pretty sure Wendy (on this forum, who has some sisters of my Silkies) bought some from there and they all turned out to be boys, so Alison had to go over and dispatch them, that's the risk with unsexed chickies though... I was going to go there until Wendy recommended Alison. Her paddock is worth the trek, such a lovely place to visit, and all her laying stock are running about when you go to see the chicks! no pressure to buy beforehand either - she let me have a look and decide whether I wanted golds there and then, or to wait for some chocolate or partridge growers to get to POL and come back later. I couldn't wait though. She caught some golds the night before in anticipation of us arriving, in case we wanted to take some straight away. When we went into the paddock, I put my cat box on the floor and all the boys were having a good old nose, they're so used to new additions coming and going they wanted to see what was in it
Chortle Chook
Oh it all sounds lovely - especially if she is going to think about blue ones. I could get to West Sussex too as my mother lives in Kent. Does she have a website or contact number?

Wait til Spring, she'll have blue and splash hatches then I'm gonna get another pair for my Birthday next May. You could get some goldies too, like mine
Chortle Chook
I have a darling little goldie but a blue or a splash - now that would be a thing This is my goldie, Dolly. Ok, she doesn't look much like a chicken but I just love her and she has consistently laid the prettiest pale pink eggs ever since I got her - nearly one a day exept when she went broody under the bamboo bush last summer on a pile of 11 hidden eggs. I was such a meany and removed them but she hasn't born a grudge.
