Gloss-Hen
Hi ive got a really bad cold at the moment. I visited the doctor ( I've been there six times this month twice for blood test, once because I had an infection, twice to find out the results of the blood test and once yesterday, to find out why I've had such a stinking cold. Turns out I'm catching everything and anything in Britain. am feeling much much better and thank you for all the comments they helped me get through this terrible virus Edited November 14, 2011 by Guest
kazmac
Not a lot you can do because colds / 'flu are caused by viruses and they can't be 'treated'. That's why you usually get the old "Keep it til it gets better" speech from the doc. However you can inhale steam if you're a bit congested or take decongestants if you're inclined - just be careful about other meds that are in them eg already contain paracetamol. Or just take ordinary paracetamol regularly for a few days. That'll help with aches and pains and also any raised temperature you might have. Drink plenty fluids and eat well - you need to build yourself up again if it's knocked you a bit as most viruses do. There's also nothing wrong with feeling a bit sorry for yourself and eating some chocolate! Get well soon!
snowberry
I had flu, then 3 weeks later got a cold. All I can suggest is vitamins.
Gloss-Hen
Thank you doc says its a virus and I'm currently taking, buttercup cough mixture, strepsils, and tablets that will help me sleep. But not all at once and I could probably do with a bit of chocolate
Ziggy
Oh poor you... a lot of rest, vitamins (especially vitamin c), and yes of course some chocolate!! Soups made with lots of fresh vegetables, some ginger and garlic, can be soothing too and help with stocking up on vitamins... Get better soon

Chickendoodle
Has to be Sleepless in Seattle for me. Guaranteed to cure a cold
chickencam
A hot toddy always helps me, with plenty of honey and fresh lemon and just a dash of whiskey, brandy or rum, followed by a good sleep. I hope that you get well soon. Then you need to build yourself up by eating plenty of fresh fruit and veg and seafood to up your zinc levels, and if i were you I would keep well away from the doctors, more illnesses are caught there than anywhere else
Cinnamon
Eat & drink what you fancy - if toy have a craving it is your bodys way of telling you that you need something. I usually crave Marmite on Toast & hot Ribena when I have a cold. A good nights sleep is essential for a quick recovery & that can be hard if you are all bunged up. I swear by Night Nurse (contains paracetamol) & a good slathering of Vick.
Tiggy
most viruses are airbourne but we pass them around on our hands too so washing your hands frequently or using some hand gel helps reduce the spread because you touch your face more often than you think. Once you've caught it there isnt much your GP can do, take it easy drink extra fluids flu remedies and time

Tweety
It sounds as if your immune system needs a boost, so I would get a good tonic such as Floradix or a supplement such as Bio-Glucan Plus. I have just had a bout of Bronchitis, and it has taken ages to get rid of the aftereffects, and am taking the Bio- Glucan on the recommendation of a friend who has not had a cold since she started taking it over a year ago. The following mixture is also very effective: grated fresh Ginger, about the size of a garlic clove, mixed with 2 teaspoons of honey, lemon juice to taste and pepper. It tastes vile, but really does the trick! Hope you feel better soon
sadietoo
Garlic.garlic..and more garlic here seems to do the trick (perhaps that's because no one can get close enough to us to pass on any germs ) Seriously though Garlic..raw if you can stand it is both antibacterial and antiviral ...try to up your intake generally would be my advice! hope you feel better soon
CatieB
I can fully sympathise as I am in the same boat and feeling very sorry for myself now... I said if there was an olympic sport for mucus production then I would win. And I've only just got over a hideous cough Lets hope we get better soon
Ziggy
Eat & drink what you fancy - if toy have a craving it is your bodys way of telling you that you need something. Must say I truly believe in that too... (unless the cravings go too much towards the alcohol kind)... it's amazing how good the body is at telling you what you need... from what to eat, to whether to snuggle down under the duvet or go out for a walk in the park... The Warrens
when i get cold / flu, i always eat currys ( i dont like spicy food, but curry make you sweat) so this is what i do ............i dose up on sudafed tablets, i also use the sudafed nasil spray so i can breath as normal, i eat a hot curry so i start to sweat, i put on my fleecy PJ and get in bed with a nice thick duvey and with heating on, you will sweat loads, which clears your cold up alot quicker than normal i find!!! as your sweating it out i swear by it

craftyhunnypie
Get a mug, put about just under an inch of rum in it & top up with boiling water. Sip slowly - Works every time! If you don't like alcohol then hot milk, with a spoon of honey in & nutmeg on the top - also works brill!I don't know why but it does.
