sjp
she could be moulting my CLB dosen't handle moulting very well and hides in the nest box and gets very grumpy far worst than my 2 broodies if she is thinking off going broody make sure you remove any eggs as soon as you can and turf her out into the cold that should do the trick
alet_chicken
Hello Katy, if she was mine, then I would simply take her out of the nest box to give her a chance to eat and drink. There is plenty of good advice to be found at http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=14370 on how to deal with a broody madam. This is an unusual time of year for hens to go broody, so it may be that she is sat in the nest box because she is not feeling very well. There is a basic health check at http://www.nda.agric.za/docs/healthychicks/chickens.htm that you can do, that should cover most bases. It may be as simple as that she is moulting; that can make them feel a bit under the weather. Let us know how you get on.
mollyripkim
Wish someone would tell Cilla my silkie its the wrong time of year. I have been removing her several times a day for food and drink with no success, so she has been in a dog cage for three days and nights - let her out this afternoon and straight back to the nest! She was persistent like this in the summer.
jennym
My Miss Pepperpot had a right broody strop this summer, and showed signs again about a week ago. It was much easier to break this time, we just booted her off the nest a couple of times and that was that. She must have realised it's a silly time to raise chicks Do carry out a health check though, just in case!
mollyripkim
Gave all girls a good health check today but especially Cilla, I left her in the cube last night and this morning she was happily sitting on three very warm eggs. The dog cage hasn,t worked so think I will leave her to get on with it and keep removing her for food and drink and to FR with the others and shut the nest box door. Hopefully the colder weather will discourage her.

jennym
someone did tell me to dunk thier bottom in cold water?? I've heard about this too but never from anyone who has said it worked for them! Not sure I'd want to soak my hen's fluffy knickers with the weather getting colder now either. Then again it took us 2 weeks to break Pippa out of her broodiness in the summer, so what do I know
