BHWT Rehoming Process?

Recommended Posts

Good Morning,

My OH has just been reading an article about the life of battery hens and commercial free range hens and has said, as we have a (green eglu) coming tomorrow, we should really 'do our bit'.

I've now registered on BHWT and e-mailed Central Hen Reservations (as that comes up as my local co-ordinator- Oswestry). There is an event on Saturday for rehoming and there is a further 2 events 1 next week and 1 the week after at a different location (Haslingdon & Wigan) but I haven't contacted that co-ordinator as yet.

I've registered online with BHWT and done the e-mail, what's next?

I'm pleased OH has come round to the idea but wish he'd done it earlier, though I think he is coming down with morehens disease worse than me!:lol:

We registered online, then phoned the number for your local area - we had to contact the Central Hen Reservation line by telephone. They take your details, including how many hens you can rehome on which day and your email address. About a week before the local rehomer emails through the details of where the rehoming is, when you are asked to come along, what you'll need and what to use to take your hens home.

Then you just set up your Eglu, get your supplies in and then wait (impatiently) for the day to come! Good luck.

I had an e-mail back saying my closest rehome event is on Sunday and they'd try and call me.

They did and I missed it as I was out doing my egg deliveries  ringing back first thing tomorrow.

OH has said we can take 3, which I think is fine for our (green eglu) , we were wondering what sort of donation is appropriate?

I don't think the donation matters. Just what you can afford. The most important thing is that you are saving 3 (or 4? ) hens from slaughter. My ex-bats, or rather ex enriched caged birds are the friendliest hens I have. The were scared, bedraggled and had not found their chicken instincts when I got them. Now you would never guess their previous life :D

Good luck xx

I spoke to Wendy at BHWT this morning :D

3 reserved for Sunday :D:D Eglu coming today too.

OH said, before I discussed with him, we should offer £10 a hen, I think he's been profoundly affected by the article he read.

Looking forward to Sunday, I showed Max a picture of an ex-battery hen and said they were coming to live with us and he said 'Oh Mummy, icken do a nudey rudey', because the chicken had no feathers!

I have no idea how much I donated. They mention on their site between £3 and 5 per hen.

If you have any spare time have you thought about volunteering?

I hadn't thought about it but it would be good to do, I know I'd get a lot out of it (maybe a lot of chooks!) I will look into it, definately, thank you for the idea :D

I'm picking up 3 more in Brackley on Saturday. I seem to remember having a telephone chat with someone who made sure I had the facilities the first time I offered.

Ex-bats are delightful - the downside is that sometimes they don't last long but 4 of my seven are into their second year, - although Rosie and I are off to the vet later today as I think she's developed sterile peritonitis. Go for it.
