New Girls

Recommended Posts

Well, it had to happen. Gwladys, our frizzle silkie, has been sleeping alone for a few months now. It didn't matter in the summer, but in the winter, she will be very cold all alone in the Eglu with the other six in the Cube. So....at the National Show, I managed to get a couple of beautiful little blue splash silkies as company for her.

My plan to introduce them gradually was completely undone by them flying over the divider, and I thought it would be chaos, but actually the big girls simply ignore them, and once the egg laying is over for the day (not many at the moment anyway!), I just shut them out of the run and let the little new ones feed. And they are sleeping with Gwladys and all of them are staying nice and warm!

Here they are...

And a gratuitous picture of Gwladys, who's been with me for 15 months

A quick update on this. Just over 3 weeks on, and they are fully integrated. Sioned and Gwladys bicker away all day, but it is very good natured grumbling, and Gwladys has blossomed since she got her own small flock to look after.

The silkies (all three) rarely come out of the WIR, but the new girls can hold their own at the feeders. They are all sleeping together nicely in the Eglu and Gwladys now has two lovely little hot-water chooks to keep her warm.

So overall, this was a very successful venture. Let's hope they actually lay some eggs in the Spring :lol:
