NewfieMum
Hello, I received this email from my contact at the BHWT and I hope you don't mind me passing it on, although this is focused on the North West it apply to the whole country. Contact details are towards the bottom. I hope you do not mind me contacting you as a previous rehomer of ex bat hens from ourselves. As the impending ban on barren battery cages draws ever closer, during the next few weeks and the rest of December we have access to a lot of battery hens from farmers who are looking to empty their barren cages before the ban comes in on January 1st. We want to take as many hens as we can and rehome as many as we can but we can't do it alone. Facebook and Twitter are excellent for reaching lots of people; could you tweet or post about our appeal for homes, blog about it or add it to your website? Maybe you have an intranet at work on which you could post, letting people know that BHWT are looking for rehomers to take in the last UK battery hens. To make things even more difficult on the rehoming front, at this time of year, our bookings traditionally slow down although as mentioned above we do have access to lots of hens at the moment and I am hoping this appeal will also generate more homes for hens coming out of their cages soon. I have a rehoming day on 7th January with still lots of space for bookings. However, we have a farm in Yorkshire who is closing in a few weeks and if we have enough bookings, I can arrange to collect as many hens as possible from them before they go to slaughter. Sophie, our new Wigan co-ordinator, has lots of space in December too. If we have the bookings and the weather is being kind to us to allow pickup from the farms, we can also continue rehoming hens through to Spring 2012. Hens can cope well with colder weather provided certain precautions are taken (see attached) although the hens we are currently taking out are mostly well feathered already. If you email me back confirming you can take some more girls, and how soon that would be great. If you want to wait until Spring, then that is fine too - just let me know and I will put you on a future list. You obviously do not need to respond unless you are in a position to take any more. Barkisland
Just bumping this. I also got the email from Adele today. Unfortunately I can't take any more at the moment, I'm over my limit already, but I've forwarded the email to a friend who has contacts who may be able to help with a few. For anyone wavering I can say from personal experience that it is the most rewarding experience to rehome some ex batts. Hope they can get lots rehomed

I don't have any room at the moment but plan to rehome some more when space allows. Chrissie

enpekt
Pecky has had a shift around to rescue two ExBats from South Lincolnshire today. After a five-hour round trip, our THREE new girls have been fed, watered and bedded. Didn't know how to climb the ramp so needed cuddling up... The four boys weren't happy to be placed in the isolation wing, despite being reminded it's a better option than boys normally get. We must say how organised the rehoming was. We were third in line on the Noon slot, so didn't have a long wait, but queuing in cars with the wind howling was most comfortable! The one-way system worked splendidly. Many thanks to all concerned! Redwing
I helped out at the Brackley rehoming today, lots of really lovely people took hens home I have bought home some poorly foster batts
memphisto
Glad lots of people took home some ex-batts at your rehoming event. Redwing- I hope you don't mind me asking, what will happen to the poorly birds? Also, when they clear the sheds at the battery farms, do BHWT take all the hens or just the hens they have guarenteed homes for? I'm just trying to (not so gently) persuade some friends to get hens and just wanted to explain the process fully.
Lavenders_Blue
I picked up 4 batties from Little Hen Rescue (Cambridgeshire collection point) today. They too have lots of girls needing homes. If anyone in/around Cambs has space for a few more girls please do let LHR know. Contact them through the website, they respond very quickly. The girls are looking a bit sorry for themselves, it took them about an hour to pluck up the courage to come out of their carrier into the run but found food and water very quickly. Looking forward to seeing another group of baldies blossom into beautiful, healthy hens.

I'm just trying to (not so gently) persuade some friends to get hens and just wanted to explain the process fully. the rehoming works to the slaughter dates that the farmers have. The number of hens is agreed up front with the farmer based on the number of firm offers that have been given for homes with maybe a few over So the farmer gives a date, the organiser says we have 300 hens (example) that have been promised homes, the farmer will then arrange for the rest of the ones in the shed go for slaughter The organiser then arranges for the 'saved' ones to be collected and taken to a rehoming 'depot' where they are unloaded, claws clipped if needed and given food and water There is usually a break of a couple of hours before the first rehomers arrive, this allows the hens to adjust a bit and recover from the journey and gives everyone a chance to pull out the obviously sick/injured hens (thankfully there are never loads) The 'poorlies' go home with a volunteer for some TLC and if necessary get vet treatment, these may get rehomed later down the line if they are fit enough to go but a few end up with the volunteer permenantly
Patricia W
I'm just bumping this up again. It was great to see Redwing and Falkor at the Brackley re-homing yesterday. My friend and I came for 3 and went home with 6 between us! Pleased to say that they are all doing well. If you can make room - please do. You won't regret it! goodinparts
I'm in Gloucestershire & have an empty at the moment...had been planning to save it for the Faverolles I've booked for the spring but can't bear the thought of lovely batty girls being slaughtered...but not sure where my nearest contact point might be. A further issue is that I'm a vicar, so struggle with getting away at weekends. Advice please.......
Ms Marple
I have emailed my local co ordinator and the central reservations team. I am hoping that the lack of contact is due to it being the weekend and people needing a life. Fingers crossed I may hear tomorrow?
