duchess
Hi there. Just wondered if any of you have any tips on how best to introduce a new Orprington cockerel. I have 13 girls and one Sebright cockerel. Should I keep the Orprington separate for a few days or just let them get on with it? Thanks. Chicken shack
When I went to collect my 3 ex-batts I accidently came home with a cockerel. I had no choice but to put him straight in with my original 5 girls as the ex-batts had the There was a few seconds of fronting off with Rhoda and that was it. However I am not sure how another cockerel would take to a new cockerel. If you have plenty of space it may be easier. Good luck.
Tweety
I think you may have a problem with the 2 boys - my 3 cockerels have been living side by side in different runs for months now, but they would still fight if given the chance If your Sebright is anything like as feisty as my Sebright hens, he will not take kindly to the competition! Your hens will probably be fine with him.
duchess
Thanks for your replies. My Sebright boy is quite a chilled out guy but I think I'll keep them side by side for a while before I let them in together. There's more than enough room for everybody and my neighbour keeps 6 cockerels with no trouble so I'm hoping they'll be ok. The cockerel I'm getting is only a young boy anyway. Chicken Shirl
My advice would be to make sure they have enough hens to go round..I have tried this year to keep a male chick hatched by one of our hens in our garden, and brought up with my existing flock of 9 hens and a cockerel.......The young cockerel was fine until he reached the age of 8 months....He then had a serious fight with my older boy of almost nine years who was no match for him...He also had no respect for my older girls that do not lay anymore......I have had to let him go I'm afraid.....Although I see him everyday as he is close by, which pleases me greatly.....He is a beautiful boy and I love him dearly. I wish you lots of luck with it.......Cock fights are not nice to watch. Having said that.....I am going to see someone tomorrow who has 50 hens running with 3 cockerels on a 2000mtr plot of land......So it can be done with enough hens. Patricia W
I'm afraid I've never been successful in keeping two cockerels together. One has always had to go. You've got quite a size difference there too. I do hope it works out. If it does let us know how you did it!
duchess
Thankyou all got your replies. I'm pleased to say the new cockerel has settled in perfectly. I just put him in with the others and after a couple of squabbles they were all fine and all happy on the perch together last night! Guess I've been very lucky
lindafw
I have a buff orpington boy and a Poland boy running with my 11 girls...no squabbles at all Baggins my buff is a very Chilled boy and Rincewind (Yes Terry Pratchett reader here) is a quiet chap. They have split the girls so Rince gets the Aracanas and the Polish girl and Baggins gets the bigger hens
