Miss Millies Chicken
Read in my local paper today that the number of free range eggs sold in Britain has outnumbered caged hens for the first time. Last year 51 per cent of the nine million eggs laid in the UK came from barn, free range or organic hens This means that 49 per cent aren't and there are still 16 million hens caged
HarrisonFamily
It would be interesting to see what the percentage of eggs used rather than just purchased....you could then take into consideration all the chickens owners with there lovely spoilt chickens who no longer buy eggs !!!! Miss Millies Chicken
The Co op in their own brand stuff use free range eggs
Lewis
Its a step in the right direction! Hellmans do too and I think M&S do
Christian
As do Waitrose I believe? I recently shopped in Asda. You couldn't get a free range egg quiche for love nor money. I wrote in.
chickencam
Asda is definitely lagging behind in the free range stakes, they sell very few free range chickens and have little or no free range egg in their own brands.

whoopsie
I think TESCO are still the worst, though they might have got better now. General quality is bad in both them and ASDA I feel.
Adelochick
Do you think that as Walmart own Asda may have something to do with lack of fr eggs in products, etc? Just a thought, Jx.

Miss Millies Chicken
Sorry typo error it should have read 9 billion eggs laid in the UK (Defra figures). The 16 million hens in cages was figures from the RSPCA.
whoopsie
It's possible that there is an American connection - As I recall it was difficult to get any free range/organic/sustainable foods in Florida or New York when I was there. heth1986
Even Aldi sells free range eggs AND they're cheaper than the caged bird ones in other supermarkets! Well done Aldi!
Leeloo
It's possible that there is an American connection - As I recall it was difficult to get any free range/organic/sustainable foods in Florida or New York when I was there. That was true about 10+ years ago, but now I see them almost everywhere, including Wal-Mart. Of course, there is some controversy about exactly what definition of "free range" and "organic" is being used. I've heard claims that you can use the "free range" label even though the birds do not get to go outside or have access to the open areas all day.
