Egluntyne
Glad you are ok Choccy. I ventured into the city centre this am (Him Indoors has his birthday on Friday) so was present shopping. (He wants a shaving brush!....thrilling! ) It was like a ghost town. Eerie. I could have parked right outside Coles if I'd wanted. Choccy will understand the significance of that! Just a few hundred yards away though, the station is underwater! (Bought myself some Crocs wellies while I was there!)
Paola
Only caught all of this on the news this morning Glad to hear you are both ok Egluntine and Choccy Such awful news that lives have been lost
chocchick
What about other Sheffielders? I realised I couldn't use the Internet to tell people I was OK, or phone them last night. Luckily I got out 1 or 2 texts before my phone went and phoned my Mum before the line went down. Not sure if OH's parents got the message though. OH says the phone line is legally supposed to be protected against flood in case of emergency. Egluntine, my Dad can talk for literally 1/2 an hour in excrutiating detail about his shaving brush and accessories he orders from Sheffield I'm intreged to see what the city centre is like
Egluntyne
Landgirl was OK yesterday. I don't know about Maria....but the area where she lives is unscathed.....so far!
Paola
I have news 24 on in the background and they have just said that looting is going on
bronze
SILs sister and family have now been evacuated. Not sure what area they live in. My parent shave just bought a house up in Chesterfield so are a little worried what state that may be in especially as their road is named after the groit. Apparently its going down quite quickly when it doesnt rain, its just the amount of water in such a short space of time the river(S) and drains cant cope with. Egluntyne
I have news 24 on in the background and they have just said that looting is going on Oh my word! I suppose they will be having the computers out of the abandoned offices. Some-one nicked the lead off the roof of a local charity shop last week (St Vincents on Abbeydale Road) ....unrelated to the floods. You wonder sometimes how low people are prepared to stoop. beach chick
gosh, just watching the lunchtime ITV news. I DO hope you are all alright up there in Sheffield/Rotherham etc. that reservoir looks v. full.
Egluntyne
On a happier note Egluntine, what colour are your Crocs wellies? Fuschia! They are so light and comfy.....its amazing. They felt a bit weird at first because your brain thinks "I've got wellies on, so they will be heavy"....so you try to walk accordingly, but your feet are so light that you lift them far too high and goose step about the place. The Dogmother
I have images now of you goose-stepping a la John Cleese in your fuschia wellies. Red wore hers to Kingston Lacey on Saturday - I think she was the driest person there!
starboyhull
Attached is a pic from around the corner from me (in Hull) I have never seen rain like it, quite a few roads have been closed too.......One of our hospitals had to cancel ALL transfers yesterday to the other hospital (usually a 20 min drive) it took one ambulance 3 hours to get there......I couldnt beleive it when I heard the nurses talking about it.... Its very sad to hear of deaths, there has been one in Hessle a village in Hull......Hope everyone stays safe..... Karl
Cinnamon
Did you take the photo with the sign saying hand Car Wash on purpose ? Sorry - I know its a serious situation, but that tickled me.
The Dogmother
Bloomin' heck Karl - that's a bit drastic isn't it? I bet there's going to be loads of pollution of the run-off from all the swamped sewers etc.

starboyhull
Least it seems to have stopped here now, although they have now warned about the river Hull bursting its banks........Seems such a terrible situation all over.......Just hope the rain holds off for everyone now...... I know the "hand car wash" sign was funny, didnt even realise what it said until you pointed it out Hopefully the hospitals will have got back to normal now, as they cannot work like that, when I was in, I did hear the nurses saying they wouldnt be able to get home as they lived in the villages and the roads had been closed......Things like this stretch our over stretched NHS...... Lets just hope the rain slows down and there are no more people hurt or killed...... Karl

theherd123
Oh crikey its getting a bit much now isnt it? This weather is frightening - where is the long hot summer promised just a few weeks ago! Hotest April for many a year and wettest June since records began! Do stay safe up there chaps!
Lesley
It's amazing just how quickly things get back to normal - I expect Clare remembers Easter 1998 around this area - terrible flooding and the M40 closed etc. Carl and SIL were nearly stranded but managed to meet up on the same stretch of road and use just one car, they made it home at 10.30pm - after leaving work at 2.30. A few days later, you wouldn't really know there had been such flooding. I hope there will be no more deaths and that the weather stays reasonable to give everyone affected the chance to recover
landgirl
Landgirl was OK yesterday. Yes, I'm fine too, thanks. I work in west Sheffield on the same side of The River Don as where I live in SW Sheffield. Unfortunately I was at the Northern General Hospital (for work, not health, reasons) yesterday afternoon and THAT is the OTHER side of the Don, so I got well and truly stuck for quite a while. The Northern Gen to my house is 6.5 miles as the crow flies, but it took 6 hours 20 minutes to get home by a very circuitous route! I could have driven to Devon in that time (in normal conditions). For local readers: I got stuck (having been diverted) near Kelham Island, in a gridlock for about 3 hours and then when I finally extricated myself from that I headed home in a huge north-then-west-bound loop until I could cross the Don at Oughtibridge. The river was the proverbial raging torrent and flooding the surrounding areas of the town, but the good old bridge was holding fast and very grateful we all were. Remember it? That's when Rosie was born! Banbury was totally flooded (thankfully not us), the sports centre was closed for 6 months to be repaired and loads of people had to move out of their homes. I was especially tickled by the narrow boat that came to rest in the middle of the Southam Road
