Lesley
Beetroot and leeks. The brassicas are picking up a bit - we may get something worth eating off them.

Valkyrie
My girls have had a go at the leeks - I don't think they like them. I shall be digging some up tomorrow.
Mrs Webmuppet
I've just dug up nearly a black buckets worth of Jerusalem artichokes...............and that's only half of the patch. They appear to be even bigger than last years, something to do with chicken manure me thinks. Now just the tricky job of using them up & giving some away ( already got rid of some to my neighbours)
Valkyrie
I am looking forward to receiving my own artichokes which should be arriving in the post in the next few weeks. Maybe, Mrs WM, you are a greenfingered person with a special touch for the chokes! At the moment the leeks are fenced off so that the girls can't pull off the leaves and drag them along the paths, but the leaves are all looking very sad with all the heavy frosts anyway. Mrs Webmuppet
I do have green fingers............I just can't seem to grow the really ordinary things though. I have never managed to grow carrots (even LMW can get them to grow in a flower pot) Personally I think its chicken poo that's made the garden grow bigger and better. Must keep them away from the overly lively climbing rose!
Valkyrie
Our carrots have always been rubbish too, but this year I tried them in flower pots - the really long ones that have had something like clematis in before - and it was successful. We had 9 carrots from 15 seeds sown - no fly damage and really tasty and so huge that they had pushed the sides of the pot out skewiffy. I did keep them in the greenhouse though. Ooh, do have another try, just a few seeds as a tester. I remember years ago I was growing dwarf nicotiana - should have been 18 inches high, but ended up having to thin them out drastically as they eventually reached 4 ft! Same thing still happens with marigolds (French and pot) are bigger than they are supposed to be when I grow them here. Can't explain it - perhaps it's the moon cycle?
