patsylabrador
Just had great little trip to Trier. It's a funny city with some incredibly old architecture. The Porta Nigra is around 2000 years old but lots of Trier was destroyed during WW2. We bought ourselves a map and guide book and did ourselves two walking tours. We didn't know that it is a major religious time in Trier, 'Heilege Rock' which we thought was a rock festival. It was actually completely different, a place of pilgrimage. The cathedral holds a tunic which was apparently worn by Jesus and there were hundreds of groups of people queueing to see it. They must have been waiting for hours and singing psalms and so on. There were school groups but the small children seemed to be filtered in. We decided not to go in the cathedral because apart from the queue, we were just tourists and it felt wrong. Our hotel was gorgeous and I'm hoping to go back for Christmas Market and visit cathedral then. I ate too many schnitzels and feel full still. "Ooops, word censored!"ody spoke English to me so my German must be improving or I'm getting better at pretending I understand.
Janepie33
Sounds lovely. Without seeming to be a bit dim, where in the world were you?
patsylabrador
Sorry, just inside Germany. We love going there and Trier is just five hours drive from Calais but utterly German.
Seagazer
Sounds lovely (must admit I'd never heard of it). I love that part of Europe, I'd like to do a bit more exploring in Germany and Austria. Luckily hubby speaks a bit of German otherwise we'd be in trouble.
Alis girls
Thanks for asking I too had not heard of this place - will look it out.
Christian
My Mum and Dad bought a house not far from there a few years ago. It is in the mountains, but Trier is the nearest large town about 30 minutes from their house. They go a few times a year as it is quite quick from Calais. The Christmas market is very quaint and they always try to go in December. There are so many lovely little villages along the river. Glad you had a good time!
