Gertie
Deer resistant plants? It's a joy to see the deer in the fields, they also come into the garden & eat all the plants & flowers...although I never see them do it! Anyway, does anyone have any tips on deer resistant evergreen shrubs? I tried planting some heuchera & sedum the other day & they took bites out of them. I've moved those to the patio behind the Eglu now! Looking on the Internet I can see some suggestions for bits & bobs but it's nice to know what everyone here has tried that works. They don't seem to eat the daffodils and hellebore or giant poppies or euonymous or pieris (yet)! Thank you
Olly
I don't have a deer problem where I live, but I had a colleague who had this ... I'm pretty sure he would say that the only remedy is fencing, I know he used to complain that the deer ate his roses so I don't think thorns are any protection. Sorry! Chicken shack
We have deer in out garden, infact as we were eating our dinner last night we were able to watch them sroll past our patio. I actually love seeing them even though they eat the plants. They don't like Rhododendrons unless they are really hungry. Budlia appear to survive, lavenda, laveteria, forsythia and ribe. I am quite new to all this though only moving here last year.
Eggasperated
We also have a deer problem, in previous years they have eaten my beans, my 16th century roses, newly planted apple trees, fuchsia, and goodness knows what else . Haven't found anything to deter them apart from fencing, and if I fence one thing off they turn their attention to something else. We have stone walls on three sides and a lade as the other boundary, all of these they can jump easily, for us to put in deer fencing the cost would be prohibitive, so we've learnt to live with them and protect the plants that we really don't want them to touch. I guess that wasn't very helpful but you are not alone, if you find a good solution I'd love to hear it .
Daphne
The deer round here just wait for all vegetables and fruit to ripen and so rarely bother with ornamentals I believe you need 6ft minimum of fencing and preferably 8ft. My neighbour has planted a laurel hedge which took 4 years to mature from 2ft skinny shrubs into an 8ft hedge - this definitely works at keeping them out but I think it could be overpowering in a small garden. Gertie
Well, so far they have not eaten the lavender i planted sorry to hear they ate your 16th century roses, the previous owner told me they like roses! Looking more closely, there are lots of different shrubs in the garden already, and they have not been munched. Definitely Laurel seems fine, Hawthorne, elder, pine trees and connifers, holly, cotoneaster, pyracantha, something my mum called Jesus and Mary (spotted large leaves and purple flowers - not shrub), Cornus, hebe, fuscia, hydrangea. I've also planted nasturtium, sage and love in the mist, so I will have to see if that survives!

Luvachicken
I went to a garden centre and saw a leaflet about deer resistant plants. I remembered one of you asked about them so I brought it home. Here is the list although it does say they are more resisitant than other garden plants but may need protection when young. Acer Agapanthas Aquilegia Azalea Bamboo Berberis Buddleja Buxus Chaenomoles Choisya Cistus Clematis Cornus sanguinea - dogwood Cortaderia selloana - pampas grass Crocosmia - monbretia Daphne Delphinium Digitalis Echinops Elaeagnus Erica carnea Forsythia Hakonechloa Hedera Helleborus Heuchera Hydrangea Iris Jasminum Kerria Kniphofia Laurus "Ooops, word censored!"ilis Lavendula Leucanthemum x superbum Lonicera Lupin Lychnis coronaria I have to do tea, so will put the rest of the alphabet later x
Gertie
Thank you very much for the list luvachicken. I must say that so far the deer have not had a munch on anything else yet...but there were some holes in my new turf...alongside some fresh deer poo! Not sure it that's a coincidence though! I have a friend who designs gardens and she says it depends on the deer, and they ate a whole school planting scheme she did once!!! Ooops! jessy27
As long as your not planing to eat the plants there is some products on the market that you just spray on the plants that will make the deer not want to eat them. I'm not sure what it's called but shouldn't be to hard to find out.

Gertie
Thanks Chicken shack, I'll have A look. Jesse, I found the stuff (in my greenhouse ), it's called Grazers! It seems like there's not much eating going on at the moment tho. It was just when the new shoots were growing and everything survived! The things that they did eat I have moved to behind the chicken coops. The deer don't go there so those plants just get scrubbed by the chickens oh well!
