Prolapse? - Update

Recommended Posts

Fearne has got what appears to be a prolapse, it didn't occur when she was laying but she got up like it this morning. She has been laying large (80g) thin shelled eggs for quite a while. I noticed there was some wet dripping off the perch this morning so checked the girls and noticed that as Fearne poos this red lump moves to and fro but does not go back in.

I have isolated her from the others and put some sugar on her vent but this hasn't made any difference, I don't know whether to attempt to put it back in as I'm afraid to cause more damage.

Can a prolapse just happen like this? Will she be ok till I can get her to the vet tomorrow? Or is there some more I can do?

Seem to be having a run of chicken problems recently, struggling with all the distress of it :( .

Honestly, it didn't take any skill. Just set everything up before you start, as if you are like me, you will find yourself wishing you had an extra hand.

I think an important part of the treatment is to take her off layers pellets, and keep her in a dark environment. The hen I looked after was in the dark, for about 10 days.

One of my girls developed a prolapse a day or two before we went on holiday. I did what I could with Anusol cream (and surgical gloves  ) and a lot of patience - smearing cream on, pushing it in and sitting with my hand over her vent to prevent it popping out again. Also used sugar. I had to send her to my friend with it still popping out occasionally but she did recover.

Good luck  .

Unfortunately have not had a lot of success. With OH I have bathed the prolapse, put on sugar and tried to put it back in, but every time Fearne pushed it out again - she also pushed out a papery egg shell. I held the prolapse in but she complained and constantly pushed against it so it came out again :( . Have now shut her in the cat basket in a dark room. I am also going away tomorrow and am having to leave OH to deal with it so he will take her to the vet if it is still the same.

It's a real shame as she is perfectly happy in herself and doesn't seem bothered that her rear end is all hanging out, think it would bother me if it was mine :( .

My OH had to nurse Fearne as I was away last week, despite initial signs of recovery (following Egluntynes treatment plan) she went on to lay another massive egg on Tuesday even though she had been on a very limited diet. After that the prolapse was completely out again and Fearne became very unwell. The vet recommended she was PTS as she found signs of infection and felt the prolapse would not go back successfully.

RIP Fearne :( .
