Overweight Other Halves - How do you help them lose weight?

Recommended Posts

There are more incentives than PURELY wanting to lose weight for your health.

For myself,I want to look better,I want to be able to shop in shops other than Evans,I want to not think people are looking at me thinking 'what a fattie':lol:

Health reasons are up there too of course, but personally speaking my reasons for wanting to lose weight are well rounded , if you will 'scuse the pun

Those are all good reasons. I guess everyone has there own sets. My partner is defo conscious as well. He is finding it more difficult to find clothing. His fitness is suffering as well. All good reasons. He is motivated and I'm there to help!

I've also mentioned an incentive - he wants a leather armchair!!

Whatever your reasons, I agree you have to want to do it first!

All the best to everyone on their mission. I'm hoping to lose a bit with him!!!

Grandchildren are an incentive!! Really though - my mum lost weight when my nephew was born & she is doing it again now my niece is nearly 6 months old - as other wise she can't keep up with them & play on the floor with them.

If he can't cut down on food, then he has to get more active!

Do you have a dog to walk? Could you get one? Perhaps he needs a sponsored slim?

I don't have this problem, as my hubby is very good at his eating habits & is extremely active.

Good Luck..

My main incentive comes from living in London, especially when I go into central London. Young, energetic people all over the place. That can make you feel fat and old very quickly so I have to fight it.

It's surprisingly good exercise to go somewhere busy and see how many people you can get past quickly, you have to be quite nimble. OH and I sometimes compete to see who can get through first, he usually wins but I think that's because he scowls at people.

 big, mean looking ex-copper will do it every time.

Reading today that diets don't work because people get to the weight they want to be then think 'now what' and gradually let it slip. The article says that a change in eating habits should be viewed as a lifestyle change from that moment on, not some transitory diet. One of those articles which states the blooming obvious

Well, my partner reports he has lost 4ilbs this week by healthy eating (lifestyle change), and he is taking up one of his many missed personal training sessions tomorrow morning. Well done OH!

Hope I can help to keep him encouraged to keep it up!!

We'd love to get a dog but both of us work full time and doggy day care is soooo expensive! No kids or grand kids yet, but I've a few friends whose children love coming over and helping us exercise!!

My OH struggles too - hes hardly drinks but has the "Greek" belly - walks 1mile a day and goes on the exercise bike. hes fairly good about food - loves salads and fruit and veg, rarely touches cakes bics or other naughty foods. I suspect he has slow metabolism (hs had thyroid checked) and some is heriditary. Greek men seem to pile the flab on round the belly ( think Stravros Flatly BGT ) . I do my best to cook healthy foods - we both try to follow low fat, sugar diet. Hes not diabetic either. Hes was talking re surgery - I told him bluntly - they would laugh at him cos hes not fat enough - and dont get any ideas as I dont find fat men sexy. That put a stop to that nonsense. Hope all your men manage the fight against the flab.

I haven't really given this much thought till OH came home on leave. :o

I have been observing the amount of food he eats and after a few days told him he would loose weight if he ate the same portion as myself. He was cross i mentioned it.

Then we had a nice take away Indian, he ordered it and i went to collect it, well i had to ask who all this food was for as there were three meals, breads and chips and i don't eat the bread or chips with a meal as it is all naughty calories and the meal itself is huge and i usually leave some so anything more is wasted.I told him if he ate all that he deserved to go pop......that was three days ago, he has been a bit cool around me as if i have insulted him . Then i had to ask if he ate like this when he is away but got no answer.

So for the rest of his leave i will only cook what he needs and no extras not even if they would make a meal to go in the freezer for when i'm not too good and see what happens.

I am expecting a few cross words but i'd rather have those than have him whinging about his weight before his next medical......But really when did he start to eat so much ?????? he didn't used to ... (must be when he's away from home and the habit has got him.)

I often worry I won't have cooked enough & end up making too much. Portion control is not either of our strong points. Last night I made tea and measured out the rice in a cup like I normally do. Then I added a bit more just in case. Just in case there isn't enough. I thought to myself, in the unlikely event that this isn't enough, have a piece of fruit. Of course it was too much anyway when cooked. I tend to stop when I'm full but my partner eats until he says he's 'ill'!

I'm rambling, but I agree, if you haven't cooked it then it's not there to tempt you. Left overs are good if they get frozen and eaten rather than tempting you to eat more of it.

I think it's such a problem, portion size as they've super sized everything in recent years do its hard to tell anymore!!

I think I'm going to have to replace every dish in the house!

As it was fathers day, there were 5 for lunch & I was really conservative with my pasta measuring...and now I have a bowl of pasta for tea tomOrrow night! Still too much
