The Great British Bake Off** Spoiler alert**

Recommended Posts

Who else watched GBBO last night ?

I felt for them cooking rum babas, definitely something people are very unlikely to have made before. The outside of that cake the lady who went out was beautiful but the inside was definitely undercooked and stodgy. I thought it was a shame, her upside down cake looked lovely.

I loved it - you can already spot some of the potential finalists. I would be a bit scared by rum baba, I've never cooked anything like that, but there were some fairly basic mistakes being made e.g. using salt and not sugar, and cooking it in a water bath - I think that led to Natasha's downfall.

I loved the 'hidden' cake idea, but not all of them were very well executed, I thought the cupcake and the hearts were very clever, a bit confused by the blackbirds one though - the exterior was beautifully decorated, but what was the middle 'hidden' bit meant to be?

One of the reasons I enjoy watching this programme is that it's so informative, Mary and Paul explain why things go wrong and I have learned a lot from this.

I watched! The right person went. I got really cross when one of the union jack cakes didn't have the red diagonals!

The blackbird cake was well.... Interesting  I thought she was tring a bit too hard.

Salt instead of sugar was just stupid( sorry)

I agree - I'd rather she'd gone than the one who left, although she did make some fundamental mistakes!

I was becoming annoyed with Paul whose main aim in the beginning seemed to ask stupid questions to un-nerve them rather than encourage them.

The Rum Babas were actually Savarins - Rum Babas are usually like little sand castles and Savarins have a hole in the middle to fill with cream and fruit......I used to make them when I worked in a bakery in school holidays and when I first left school.....a long time ago, perhaps they've evolved over the years

Yup! Monday evening at 6.30pm! I think it may be on every day at that time, but my on tv guide doesn't share more than that days guide with me

Thanks Karin - I'll go and catch up then :D

I think I was just sorry Natasha was chosen as I'd warmed to her lovely smile. Whilst it's been a while since I had my boys  she looked just like the sort of lovely smiley capable midwife you'd want :D

I though the blackberry pie idea was clever but didn't like it. I did like the hearts. My sister made a lovely rainbow cake recently which was the first time I'd really come across the idea of a hidden design in a cake. I thought one of the union jacks was executed much better than the other, odd two of them came up with very similar idea bet they weren't happy when they realised their idea wasn't unique

We've been watching this programme again, DD and I love it. DD bought the last book too and really enjoys baking. At a tournament our canoe club ran a couple of weeks ago, we had a lovely selection of home made cakes including

DM's lemon drizzle made by me (along with copious amounts of cup cakes and Fluff - rice crispie cakes). My DD make a fantastic victoria sponge and cup cakes.

Somebody else made a union jack cake and it looked absolutely fantastic. I don't think I have the patience to make something like that though.

Just caught up with this weeks episode. Surprised it was Victoria that went this early. I find it interesting how much is on great flavour combinations. My younger son commented that I tend to follow recipes and not think up my own combinations that much.

I remember being surprised how easy treacle tart was to make when I first tried it the other year - but I've never tried doing a lattice top. Must try that next time.

I've never tried making patisserie - looks way too exact ad time consuming.

I have only just got to watch it - wasn't available for a day or so and then everything got in the way this evening. I loved the two top bakes today  I did not like the sound of the pineapple and blackberry - just can't picture those two flavours together :? I would love to try a treacle tart as it is something I do like, but never think of making. I thought Manisha was going this week, but Victoria just didn't do well at all. Such a shame.

I'm confused. I'm sure it just said that a torte doesn't contain wheat flour.

So all the sponge layers are made from something other than wheat flour?

Off the top of my head, I'd think a crisp base and layers of sponge and mousse would constitute a Torte?

I've not googled it but I don't think anyone I know would complain if I put "normal" flour in the sponge for my torte.

Am I wrong?

I didn't think a torte was defined as having no wheat flour - and according to Wikipedia some European tortes don't have layers. I think perhaps that was Paul Hollywood's definition of a torte!

It does seem to be veering more towards patisserie and less towards home baking, but perhaps it was just that episode. Some of the decorations were amazing this week - but not stuff I could see myself making at home. I'm still loving it, though - the creme caramels were interestingly varied!
